One of the largest AI decision-support initiatives in pediatric dentistry is now being built in Sweden - and Nanok Dental AI are proud to lead it.

Together with Helsingborg Specialisttandvård, Nanok Dental AI is launching a large-scale clinical AI initiative designed to strengthen decision support in everyday pediatric dentistry.

The project focuses on developing:
• AI-based decision support for caries-related findings in primary teeth
• AI-assisted identification and assessment of impacted canines

AI initiatives in pediatric dentistry at this scale are uncommon, particularly when built on real-world clinical workflows and structured specialist collaboration.

- Ethical approval is in place.
- The clinical partnership is established.

This initiative is about more than technology.

What does it really mean when AI shows higher precision than dentists?

In a large peer-reviewed study on proximal caries detection in bitewing X-rays:

🦷 13,887 bitewings were analyzed
🫂 4,933 patients were included
🥼 6 independent experts annotated the images individually

The deep learning model demonstrated 2.2× higher precision compared to average dentist performance.

But the key question isn’t who performs better. It’s how this can be applied in real clinical practice.

When AI is used as decision support:

- subtle findings are less likely to be missed
- consistency between assessments increases
- clinical confidence improves

AI doesn’t replace the dentist. It acts as an extra pair of eyes - consistent, tireless, and available when workload is high.

When patients understand, fear fades😱 -> 😌
A large part of treatment planning doesn’t happen in the chair, it happens in the conversation.

For many patients, x-ray images are hard to interpret. It feels abstract and when things are unclear, uncertainty often turns into anxiety:

“What does this mean?” “Is it serious?” “Will it hurt?”

Visual decision support can make patient communication clearer and more reassuring:
- Highlighted areas make it easier to explain why treatment is needed
- Patients gain more insight into their own treatment
- The conversation becomes more educational, less “just trust me”

And the key point:
When patients understand, fear often disappears.

AI Act - What Does It Mean for Dentistry?🦷⚖️

The EU AI Act is the world’s first comprehensive regulation for artificial intelligence, protecting both users and patients.
It entered into force on 1 August 2024, with most obligations applying from August 2026.

In dentistry, AI systems that support diagnosis or treatment, such as imaging tools, are typically classified as high-risk.
They must therefore meet strict requirements for transparency, documentation, data quality, and human oversight.

In our published peer-reviewed study, "Deep learning for proximal caries detection on bitewing x-ray", Nanok Dental AIs model demonstrated a precision 2.2 times higher than the best-performing dentist in the study.

This is also one of the largest AI dental caries studies ever published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal – a milestone that highlights both the potential of AI in dentistry and the importance of rigorous research.
