Designing columns should not require jumping between multiple tools, spreadsheets, and manual checks. That's exactly why we’re building SIMPLEX Column. It’s a dedicated application that helps you analyse and design concrete, steel, and timber columns efficiently, even when the calculations are complex.

After all, designing columns rarely stops at normal force and bending. Add biaxial loading, imperfections, connection eccentricities, and second-order effects, and what looked like a straightforward design task quickly becomes more demanding.

With SIMPLEX Column, you'll be able to:

- Analyse and design concrete, steel and timber columns in one application.
- Use the General Method for concrete columns.
- View interactive N-M interaction diagrams.
- Generate load combinations automatically.
- Apply local load eccentricities.
- Automatically design reinforcement layouts and section sizes.

Join the waiting list today, and you will receive two months of free usage when SIMPLEX Column becomes available this autumn.

Can AI help when working with FEM models? Our colleague Joni Hytönen recently put this to the test, exploring where AI already delivers real value and where engineering expertise remains essential.

For us, this is particularly interesting because FEM-Design has always been built around open data flows and collaboration.

The results highlighted two distinct categories of tasks:

✅ Tasks where AI clearly outperforms manual work

AI can efficiently handle repetitive and data-driven tasks that would otherwise take significant engineering time. The scope of these tasks is broader than many might expect.

✅ Tasks that still require engineering judgment

Understanding load paths, load redistribution, structural behaviour, and system interactions remains a challenge that requires deeper human reasoning. AI can learn from existing examples, but engineering intuition and experience remain critical.

One particularly observation from Joni's test was how AI worked with text-based input files. Without providing specific examples of point moments, it was able to generate them correctly by interpreting sample files and leveraging publicly available information.

The experiment also showed that results can be achieved even without MCP (Model Context Protocol) or advanced integrations. On the other hand, API/MCP-based workflows are becoming increasingly reliable.

Earlier this year, we released FEM-Design 25. This version delivers consistent and meaningful upgrades that help you design faster and analyse with greater accuracy.

In case you don’t know the details, here’s a quick list of what’s new:

- 7 DoF Warping Bar Model: get more realistic behaviour for steel beams and columns

- Extended IFC Interoperability: get IFC 4.3 support and extended import and export options

- RC Design Performance Boost: get faster calculations and improved handling of large models

- Improvements and Quality-of-Life Features: get improved buckling length management, improved user profiles for FE modelling, new result visualisation and post-processing features, extended parametric module, and more.

P.S. Did you know? FEM-Design was created more than 25 years ago when two software programs merged, one from Sweden and one from Hungary. Today, the main development of the software is based in Budapest. The development team is composed of experienced engineers and specialists in FEA, mathematics, and coding.

Some of the changes coming in the Eurocode generation 2 might look small on paper, yet have a real impact in practice. Here are 4 areas to keep on your radar.

- Deflections
- Snow Loads
- Section Classification
- Minimum Reinforcement

“We are working hard to implement the second-generation Eurocodes in both Simplex and FEM-Design, and we are getting very close to completing the standard implementation. The next big question is what the national annexes will bring,” says Isak Björhag, Head of 2D R&D at StruSoft.

Reducing manual model corrections and fixing broken geometries in your BIM workflow starts with reliable data exchange between Revit and FEM-Design. If you missed our recent webinar on creating an efficient and stable Revit to FEM-Design workflow, the recording is now available to watch on demand.

In this session, you’ll see how to achieve consistent model transfer and minimise the time spent repairing analytical models, so you can focus on structural design instead of troubleshooting data exchange issues.

Topics covered include:

- Physical vs analytical model workflows
- IFC vs direct API exchange
- Automatic conversion with minimal manual input
- Stable, consistent structural models across tools

We have some good news to share from behind the scenes: FEM-Design API 2.0 is in the works! The FEM-Design API was originally developed with Grasshopper workflows in mind. Since many of our users work in that environment, the integration has provided a powerful way to automate modeling and analysis tasks.

However, engineering workflows are changing rapidly, and AI is becoming a major part of that transformation. That's why our experts, Marco Pellegrino and Andrea Lőrincz have been working on what we often call a "refactor" but, in reality, is a complete rewrite.

Over the coming months, we'll be sharing more demos, examples, and insights into what's possible. Stay tuned! 😊

Recently, our colleagues Marek Krawczyk and Jan Wrobel had the opportunity to participate to the 40th National Construction Designer Workshop in Wisła, organized by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians, Małopolska Branch.

They met with structural engineers from across Poland, discussed FEM-Design workflows, and exchanged insights on some of the industry's current challenges, including geotechnics and its impact on building and civil engineering projects.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand, shared their experiences, and asked questions. It’s great to see increasing interest in FEM-Design and to continue strengthening our presence in the Polish market through such local events, partnerships, and technical discussions.
