Today we'd like to share our thoughts about tournament play in ALARA Prime.

Traditionally, the go-to solution for tournaments in shooter games is the classic double elimination where teams have a chance to fight back to the final even with one loss behind them.
It was going to be trickier with a three team setup like in ALARA Prime. When we started to explore our options we knew that it would be easy to construct a single elimination bracket as long as we had a factor of three when it comes to the total number of teams. However, we wanted to find something more fair like the double elimination system, but we realized that with three teams we'd often end up with situations where there were four teams somewhere in the middle of bracket-play. These four teams would have to face each other in some way that would result in one being crowned the winner of the group. We tried to figure it out but with four teams, you will often end up with a king maker situation, which is definitely something we want to avoid.

After much deliberation we found a good bracket system that works with 27 teams. Matches would be played best out of three maps with a possible fourth map tiebreaker.

We have other designs that could work for lower numbers where we have a group stage ending with single elimination. With that said, we wanted to show you the design that we are excited about using for major events in the future.

Distinguishing Enemies and Teammates

Last year, players jumping into an ALARA Prime match would have one of three colours assigned to their team: Blue, Red or Yellow. A fantastic takeaway from the public playtest was around issues with the experience of playing multiple consecutive matches. In ALARA Prime, split-second decisions can be the deciding factor in a win or lose situation. Knowing if you need to pull the trigger or not is crucial. When we saw players play one match after another, we picked up on moments of confusion as they moved from one match playing on the Yellow team, killing Blue and Red enemies, to another match playing as Blue killing Yellow and Red enemies. Two team games don't need to tackle a problem like this but it became evident that we needed to do something.

We decided to introduce relative team colours, which makes it so that you always see your own team as Blue while your enemies will always appear as Yellow and Red. This also meant that we needed a new way to refer to specific teams without relying on colours, since each team sees them differently. To solve this, we have introduced team names that are assigned per match: “Orion”, “Helix” and “Nova”. Relative team colours create a clear and consistent distinction between friendlies and enemies every match. You don’t need to adapt to the team colours for every new game, but you are still able to distinguish between the enemy teams.

Now, that’s not all! Readability in a competitive game is extremely important and we wanted to make sure that regardless of situation, environment or character skin, opponents are clearly seen by all players, even in different graphical settings. After a lot of prototyping we have introduced team coloured outlines which should result in a much greater gaming experience.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts about these changes!
