Distinguishing Enemies and Teammates
Last year, players jumping into an ALARA Prime match would have one of three colours assigned to their team: Blue, Red or Yellow. A fantastic takeaway from the public playtest was around issues with the experience of playing multiple consecutive matches. In ALARA Prime, split-second decisions can be the deciding factor in a win or lose situation. Knowing if you need to pull the trigger or not is crucial. When we saw players play one match after another, we picked up on moments of confusion as they moved from one match playing on the Yellow team, killing Blue and Red enemies, to another match playing as Blue killing Yellow and Red enemies. Two team games don't need to tackle a problem like this but it became evident that we needed to do something.
We decided to introduce relative team colours, which makes it so that you always see your own team as Blue while your enemies will always appear as Yellow and Red. This also meant that we needed a new way to refer to specific teams without relying on colours, since each team sees them differently. To solve this, we have introduced team names that are assigned per match: “Orion”, “Helix” and “Nova”. Relative team colours create a clear and consistent distinction between friendlies and enemies every match. You don’t need to adapt to the team colours for every new game, but you are still able to distinguish between the enemy teams.
Now, that’s not all! Readability in a competitive game is extremely important and we wanted to make sure that regardless of situation, environment or character skin, opponents are clearly seen by all players, even in different graphical settings. After a lot of prototyping we have introduced team coloured outlines which should result in a much greater gaming experience.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts about these changes!
