To kick off the series, weโre featuring our Managing Director, Byron Matthiopoulos.
Byron joined Slash in 2018 as a Product Owner, bringing a background in medical research, journalism, and advertising photography. Over the past eight years, he has led cross-functional engineering teams across Europe and Southeast Asia, evolving from Head of Product to Managing Director.
A decade ago, Slash began as a tight-knit engineering team in Cambodia, balancing complex enterprise systems with communal lunches and after-work gaming sessions. Today, as a global AI-first digital studio, our roots remain unchanged.
Here are 5 key executive lessons Byron has learned along the way:
1. Stop fixing problems. Start asking why they exist. Moving into executive leadership requires unlearning the pure solution-oriented mindset. Don't just patch a fire, but identify the structural root cause.
2. AI changes how you execute, not what you stand for. AI unlocks team velocity, but human judgment, context, and experience remain the true directional compass.
3. Donโt let the smoke kill you while putting out the fire. In a crisis, throwing every resource at the problem can drain you completely. Sometimes, you must scale back to survive and rebuild.
4. Protracted decisions are more painful than hard choices. Stalling high-stakes calls only extends organizational pain. Decide collaboratively, execute fast, and manage the outcomes.
5. Remote teamwork requires intentional community. Distance dilutes engagement. Building a resilient, global team means maintaining community at all costs.
