A vessel is not a factory. In a plant, a pump or motor may run under relatively stable conditions. Offshore, machinery is affected by changing load, RPM, vessel speed, draft, trim, thruster demand, auxiliary load, wind, waves, and current.

This is why fixed vibration thresholds can be misleading. A level that is normal during maneuvering may be abnormal during steady sailing. A spike in harsh weather may not mean mechanical failure.
