🚢 EU ETS surcharges are now eating up to 12% of container freight rates. With full 100% compliance in force, the industry-wide bill could nearly double to $2.7B in 2026 — up from $1.4B last year.

📐 Brussels gave the whole industry one measuring stick. CountEmissionsEU — built on ISO 14083 — entered into force 1 June, creating a single common methodology across every transport mode.

⏰ Next EU ETS bill lands 30 September: shipping operators must surrender allowances covering 70% of 2025 emissions, or face penalties.

🌍 87 shipping companies and ports are pushing the IMO to finally approve its long-delayed global carbon levy — worth up to $15B a year in projected revenue by 2030.

✈️ Aviation isn't exempt either. CORSIA compliance costs are projected to climb to $1.7B in 2026 — a 31% jump in a single year.

📋 Emissions-methodology providers are lining up for formal accreditation against ISO 14083 — cementing it as the market's default, not an option.

🚛 China is charting a system-wide shift from trucks to rail and waterway, per ICCT's new "Beyond Trucks" report — a preview of where multimodal freight decarbonisation is heading region-wide.

🤝 Closer to home: PSA International and Yang Ming Marine Transport signed an MOU centred on a joint digital Book & Claim framework — a strong signal of where multimodal carbon accounting is heading next.

Your cargo just started paying two separate carbon taxes. Most shippers don't even know it yet. 🚨

On 1 July, the UK folded shipping into its own emissions trading scheme. Sixteen days later, Brussels proposed extending the EU's scheme to vessels as small as 400 gross tonnes. Mid-sized carriers who assumed they were too small to be taxed on carbon... aren't anymore.

Here's what that means depending on how far out you're planning:

📌 Immediate: freight quotes on UK and EU lanes now reflect two separate, non-aligned carbon prices instead of one.

📊 Short-term: smaller vessel operators need to start tracking emissions data they've never had to report before.

🌏 Long-term: freight already accounts for 40% of transport emissions, and the world is on pace to burn through 86% of its remaining carbon budget by 2030. Regional carbon pricing isn't going away — it's multiplying.

Meanwhile, China just put its first zero-carbon sea-river route into commercial operation, saving over 2,000 tonnes of CO2 a year on a single vessel.

The gap between companies who can prove their emissions numbers and those who can't is widening fast.

🌊 Six regulations are reshaping maritime and freight transport in 2026 — and one methodology now ties them all together.

This year, carbon compliance in shipping stopped being a future problem:
✅ EU ETS reached 100% coverage of in-scope emissions (Jan 2026)
✅ FuelEU Maritime completed its first full compliance cycle (June 2026)
✅ CountEmissionsEU entered into force, making EN ISO 14083:2023 the reference methodology for EU transport emissions reporting
⏳ The IMO Net-Zero Framework, the largest open variable in maritime carbon cost, goes to a vote on 4 December 2026
