Gregory Porter - A Summer Evening Built Around Connection ✨

Porter’s greatest quality may be his ability to cross genre boundaries without losing his essence. His music can satisfy a deep jazz aficionado while reaching just as directly to a casual listener who simply bought a concert ticket on a summer holiday.

The band could stretch out, but they could also pull everything back when the song required it. From extended bass solos and collective jams to quiet voice-and-piano moments, the concert showed musicians who were not simply delivering songs, but enjoying the music themselves.

Throughout the evening, Porter returned to love, peace, compassion, and empathy, making clear that he sees music as a medium for connection. In Opatija, that message reached beyond genre boundaries, bringing jazz listeners and casual audiences together.

Ida Nielsen Group - A Prince Celebration
The ZigZag Jazz Festival, Berlin ✨

Ida Nielsen is a musical phenomenon. The Danish bassist, composer, and singer has been a member of several groundbreaking acts such as Zap Mama, New Power Generation, and 3rdeyegirl. The latter marked her international breakthrough as part of the backing bands for the legendary musical genius Prince, serving as his first-call bassist until his passing in 2016.

One of the surprises, and one of the stars, of the evening was American singer Liv Warfield, who also worked with Prince in the New Power Generation. Together, they turned the concert into more than a tribute. It was a celebration of Prince's legacy - alive, fearless, and filled with passion.

Anyone who has experienced Ida and her exquisite band live will not soon forget their electrifying and captivating performance!

Ida Nielsen Group - A Prince Celebration - The ZigZag Jazz Festival, Berlin ✨

You could already tell that a special evening was about to happen as the anticipating crowd gathered in front of the great-sounding Gasometer in Berlin. Once the sold-out hall was filled to the last seat, Nielsen started playing the bass riff from “Sign o’ the Times”. The audience immediately got to its feet, proving that this would be as much a party as a concert.

One of the surprises, and one of the stars, of the evening was American singer Liv Warfield, who also worked with Prince in the New Power Generation. Prince also produced her 2014 album The Unexpected.

The Bad Plus: A Collective Sound Built to Last ✨

Founded by bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King, The Bad Plus released its first album in 2000 and became known for its unusual approach to the piano trio format, as well as its adventurous arrangements of songs from outside jazz. After pianist Ethan Iverson left in 2017, Orrin Evans joined the group, before the trio expanded into a quartet in 2021 with the addition of guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist and clarinetist Chris Speed.

This year, Anderson and King announced that they would bring their chapter of The Bad Plus to a close at the end of 2026. Their Berlin appearance at the sold-out Gasometer Hall was therefore one of the band's final European concerts and its last in Berlin. Yet, despite the farewell context, the evening did not feel nostalgic. Instead, it offered a convincing reminder of what has made The Bad Plus such a distinctive collective for so long.

Bill Charlap Trio at Zig Zag Jazz Festival: A Masterclass in the Art of Listening ✨

There are few musical settings as rewarding as a great piano trio. At its best, it combines intimacy with orchestral depth, allowing every nuance of touch, dynamics, and interaction to become part of the performance. Yet such moments are becoming increasingly rare in an era dominated by amplification and visual spectacle. Bill Charlap's appearance at the Zig Zag Jazz Festival in Berlin was one of those occasions where closing your eyes almost felt like listening to a perfectly engineered studio recording—except everything unfolded live, naturally, and with an immediacy no recording can fully capture.

LEDISI

Some voices never fade.

They simply find
new ways to speak.
Through jazz.
Through soul.
Through every note held just long enough.

A tribute
that became
something entirely her own.

Frozen moments from Ledisi's unforgettable performance honoring Dinah Washington at The ZigZag Jazz Festival.
