THE 50/40/10 RULE

Awesome post by Caleb O'Dowd ...

Over the past 15 years, I’ve generated over $150 million dollars in revenue from my sales copy.
And let’s get one thing clear: I am NOT a good copywriter.
In fact, during that time I’ve spent more than $300,000 hiring A-Level copywriters to improve my conversions.
And guess what?
Not a single A-level copywriter has ever beaten my controls!
Ever.
Why? Because even top copywriters neglect two important areas of marketing. I focus 90% of my attention on two important areas and my results speak for themselves.
Now, before I dive into these two things, here’s something important…
Don’t Call Yourself A “Copywriter”
Copywriters spend most of their time learning the craft of writing copy.
Big mistake.
The term “copywriting” and “copywriter” both imply that your job is “to write.”
But this couldn’t be further from the truth!
Writing is simply a vehicle to deliver your message. Sure, copywriting has its place but it’s not the big picture.
So what’s a more accurate term to describe your job?
How To Create Breakthrough Advertising
If you want to create breakthrough advertising remember this:
Your job is to sell.
It's NOT to write copy.
All the copywriting legends have been salesmen first. Gary Halbert, for example, sold encyclopedias door to door. A hardcore sales job.
You must translate the skill of salesmanship into the written word. “Salesmanship In Print” is a better word than copywriter.
However, even that doesn’t sum up the role. The best description for your role that I’ve come up with is this:
“Investigative salesman in print.”
It’s a clunky name and it won’t catch on. Doesn’t matter.
To write great copy you must be a master of salesmanship. And the only way to be an effective salesman is to become a master investigator.
You must investigate your prospects, investigate your competitors, investigate the market and investigate all the available solutions.
In fact, this is the #1 reason most copywriters don’t make it long term.
They don’t investigate enough. (Or at all.)
I can’t stress this enough!
Without deep investigation into your industry, you don’t have a snowball's chance in hell of being a professional copywriter.
The Golden Rule For Creating Breakthrough Advertising
Do you know Gary Bencivenga? If not, you need to Google him right away!
He's widely considered the greatest living copywriter in the world. He has a great saying that goes like this, “The game is won in research.”
I agree.
Here is where you need to focus your time:
50% investigation
40% salesmanship
10% copywriting
I call this the 50/40/10 Rule. Focus your time and effort on the 90%. Focus on investigation and salesmanship.
Copywriting is the icing on the cake. It's also the least important part of the entire process.
The investigation phase is where breakthroughs happen.
How To Become An Elite Advertiser
For three years, I lived and worked with the late copy legend Gary Halbert on hundreds of projects.
Want to know why his copy out-performed his rivals?
For 28 days he never wrote a single word of copy. He researched the prospect, market, competitors and planned the system to sell the product.
Finally, on the 29th day, he wrote the copy. On day 30, he edited and polished the copy to perfection.
Halbert didn’t put much emphasis on the actual “writing.” He hammered this concept into my head over and over again.
And now I’m going to hammer it into your head:
From this point forward your “role” is not a copywriter.
You’re an investigative salesman in print.
Long-winded but accurate.
If you want to sell millions of your own products or services… or… if you want to become an in-demand copywriter, this is the only way.
How Bencivenga Became The World’s Best Living Copywriter
While other copywriters took 30 days to write a sales letter, Bencivenga took 90.
Why 90 days?
Because he knew how important it was to spend a massive amount of time in the investigation phase. For this reason, he consistently won against 85% of ads he was hired to beat.
If you investigate more, you can beat out copywriters that have a higher profile than you.
The Dirty Little Secret About Most “A Level” Copywriters
Most A-level copywriters are not actually A-level.
It's just publicity and positioning.
They're just really good at copywriting.
But a copywriter who's great at investigation and a skilled salesperson, would beat the pants off an “A-list” copywriter every day of the week.
The only exception would be the true greats of the game.
To sum up, forget learning to be a copywriter.
Instead, become an investigative salesman in print.
Spend 50% of your time investigating.
Spend 40% of your time on salesmanship.
And spend only 10% writing copy.
Follow this advice and you’ll fast track your path to generating breakthrough advertising.
