"For me, we are in a community, and when I talk about community, I mean, the World"
Omar Sene in conversation with Flora Fauna Project
As part of ROOM we issued an open call and Dance artist and Choreographer, OMAR SENE is our selected artist from this process. Omar is founder of Compagnie pasytef dalifort , created Dalifort Dance Festival and he is a member of The Fifth Dimension Company. He is also a founding member and teacher of the first dance academy in Senegal, Alvin Ailey. Today its mission is to train young people across Senegal and the world. He is both an artist and activist for social change.
Omar's life is dedicated to dance and to educating the people, particularly the youth, in his local neighbourhood of Dalifort, Senegal. His Dance Festival takes place on the streets so that the Imam, parents and children can witness the power and purity of this art form. Omar believes firmly that dance must move from out the studio and go to meet the people where they are. Despite his many commitments to his neighbourhood, Omar also continues his research to deepen his own dance technique named Zagala, which is a spirit of life, a resistance to life.
Omar's ROOM is an inspiring glimpse into an artist committed to bringing his community with him through the intelligence and expression of dance and creative practices. Omar has witnessed a lot of violence and social challenges, we believe his response is remarkable and noteworthy. We are delighted to give ROOM to such a hero, and we are very glad he reached out to us. Coming Jan 2021
