PragmaCraft is 13 Years Old Today.

For 13 years, we have been building toward a moment the world has only recently started to understand. The mission stayed the same; the technology caught up.

Long before today’s AI wave, we believed that knowledge should not remain buried in documents, systems, and silos. We believed organizations should be able to treat knowledge as a strategic asset: something they can access, trust, and turn into real value.

Over the years, the industry changed its terminology many times. From semantic search to deep question answering to advanced enterprise RAG, the tools evolved dramatically. But our principle did not: build useful AI over hype, and turn cutting edge technology into practical systems that solve real problems for real customers under real world constraints.

We were early, and we stayed. With patience, persistence, and long term craftsmanship, we kept building through changing markets, changing technologies, and changing expectations.

Ten years ago today I wiped a whiteboard and wrote: “KEEP CALM & LSTM!”

I was building our "Intelligent Search Assistant" project, pulling answers from search results with seq2seq and early NLP. It felt ambitious and fragile at the same time.

Here is a hard-won lesson learned in a decade: RAG isn’t a checkbox. The thing that makes or breaks it is evaluation. Real questions are messy and diverse. The valuable ones jump across documents, demand query rewriting, multi-hop reasoning, and tables/figure parsing. If you don’t measure that, you ship a demo.

We learned it the long way, first with our own trained reranker, now with advanced RAG, multi-step retrieval, iterative reasoning, strict guardrails, and traceable citations, all measured against ground truth and real failure modes.

How our stack evolved

- Models: from LSTMs/seq2seq to early transformers (BERT) to cross-encoder rerankers, kept our own reranker longer than fashionable because it worked on noisy enterprise text.

- Retrieval: from dense to query rewriting and multi-hop retrieval when the question demands it.

- Document understanding: from plain text and PDFs/OCR to reliable table & figure parsing, version tracking, and citations that land on the right cell/row.

- Evaluation: from smoke tests to ground-truth sets, adversarial cases, failure taxonomies, and release gates tied to business SLOs.

- Ops & governance: from lab boxes to on-prem, bank-grade deployments: RBAC, auditability, PII filters, latency budgets, air-gapped realities.

- Safety: from rules to guardrails that run within strict GPU/latency envelopes and are measurable (not vibes).

What hasn’t changed

- Vision: Treat knowledge as a strategic asset.
- Problem: Find truth, cite it, keep data safe.
- Principle: Shipping beats slides.
- Bet: Trustworthy on-prem GenAI will win in enterprises.

Twelve incredible years have passed since we officially launched PragmaCraft, and what a journey it has been! From our early days of exploring NLP before deep learning frameworks even existed, to the present moment, where generative AI and large language models revolutionize our field, we’ve never stopped pushing boundaries.

This past year has been another whirlwind full of breakthroughs, challenges, and reasons to celebrate. Our core product, “Answie - Intelligent Search Assistant” has evolved with the power of generative AI, offering unprecedented capabilities in natural language understanding and intelligent data retrieval. We’ve continued to strengthen our collaborations with industry leading partners, forging new paths in AI driven knowledge management and automation.

We owe our progress to the incredible dedication and expertise of our ever growing team - researchers, engineers, product champions, dreamers, and doers - who pour their talent into everything we build. Thank you for sharing our vision and creating a place where bold ideas flourish!

As we, the PragmaCraft family, celebrate our 10th anniversary today, we can't help but feel immense pride in our journey. Established on April 12, 2013, our company has been at the forefront of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and natural language processing, developing innovative products and offering expert consultancy services. Our name, "PragmaCraft," symbolizes our unwavering dedication to combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, a principle that has guided us throughout the past decade.

When we started in 2013, our vision was a world where people could receive direct answers to their questions in natural language, rather than sifting through countless Google search results. As large language models emerge today, it's both humbling and enlightening to witness our vision come to life. Our maiden product, the "Intelligent Search Assistant," enabled us to blaze a trail in the NLP field in Turkey and further our vision. We have been harnessing the power of cutting-edge technology, including large language models (LLMs), to refine our products and take them to new heights.

Over these 10 years, numerous talented individuals have joined the PragmaCraft family, and we currently boast an exceptional team working on our projects. Our journey has seen us grow consistently by providing top-notch consultancy services and products.

PragmaCraft’s 9th Birthday

Another year of ups and downs, resolutions and complications, milestones and uncertainties, ones and zeros has passed. PragmaCraft made it through its 9th birthday! Throughout this year we pushed ourselves to limits we had never thought were possible. We’ve applied our intelligent search vision to our core customer, the biggest private bank in Turkey. With their trust and support we achieved it all together, and this has been a major milestone for knowledge workers to overcome information overload. We worked on a new beta version of Answie on the web, still a long way to go but it was a great start.

To commemorate 9 years of teamwork, dedication and faith, we’re fortunate to acknowledge and honor our team members’ wholehearted commitment. We couldn't have pulled this off without you. Thanks for helping us to create an environment of ownership, speaking up and having fun. We’ve expanded our data science team as well as product development team with very experienced people in their domains along with very fresh and bright minds from top universities of the country. We’ve created a working harmony between our ML researchers, Data Scientists, and Product Engineers. We’re proud to be a happy workplace for the pragmatic programmers. PragmaCraft is 8 Years Old!

As of April 2021, PragmaCraft is 8 years old. Yes, we have been creating business value using AI & NLP, before it was cool. Starting from the early days of our journey, we have witnessed the rise of Deep Learning and how it transformed Natural Language Processing. We have been creating Deep Learning models before there was TensorFlow or PyTorch. We have created the first commercial Neural Machine Translation engine between Turkish and English, and the first Turkish ELMo embeddings used in a commercial project. Throughout our journey, we strived to conduct cutting-edge NLP research and solve real problems of real customers at the same time. Besides, we've shared what we've learnt with the community and contributed to AI programs in various non-profit organizations like Veri Bilimi Istanbul, Inzva, and Kodluyoruz.

Today, we're proud to work with the biggest private bank of Turkey, Türkiye İş Bankası, on numerous AI projects, among our international clients, in addition to our beloved AI product, Answie.

Six Years of PragmaCraft!

We have started our journey 6 years ago today. Over these six awesome years, we have created our Natural Language Processing pipeline and been one of the first companies to dive deep into Deep Learning. We were lucky enough to work on cutting edge technologies like Question Answering, Neural Machine Translation, and Summarization.

Now we're happy to have this awesome team consisting of the brightest minds of our country, tackling the most challenging problems of Artificial Intelligence. We have grown to work with the biggest private bank of Turkey, on one of the first AI projects in the banking industry, in addition to our predictive prospecting and lead generation products.
