Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Ebru Yetişkin — a pioneering media art curator, art critic, and researcher whose work sits at the crossroads of science, technology, politics, and art.

Her seminar took us on a journey through futurisms — from the radical provocations of the early avant-garde to today’s technofuturist practices — exploring how design and artistic methods don’t just reflect the future, but actively script it. How do aesthetic strategies and creative speculation shape the collective imaginaries we end up living in?

One of the highlights was a thought-provoking exchange with our colleague Daniele Savasta, who raised a powerful question after Yetişkin’s discussion of Afrofuturism: “Is there an Anatolian Futurism — or could there be?” A question that is still lingering in our minds.

It was a wonderful gathering of students and faculty, and a reminder of why these conversations matter. Many thanks to Ebru Yetişkin for her generosity, her depth of thought, and for the ideas she left behind.

Repost from
・・・
While dealing with all these problems of everyday life, how can we (even) rethink and design alternative futures for commons today? Here are some parts of my seminar today at Izmir University of Economics. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality and kind invitation 🌻

Adopting a crtical lens, this seminar examines how design operates as a strategic agent of transformation. Through the analysis of pioneering artworks—from the radical provocations of diverse Futurisms to speculative design thinking, we explore how artistic and design methodologies can construct collective imaginaries and material conditions. The session interrogates how aesthetic strategies, emerging technologies, and creative speculation participate in scripting the technological, social, and cultural futures we come to inhabit.

Focusing on creative industries that design the future as a massive global force actively shaping reality itself, this seminar examines how design operates as a strategic agent of transformation. Through the analysis of pioneering artworks—from the radical provocations of Futurism to contemporary technofuturist practices—it engages with diverse futurisms to explore how artistic and design methodologies construct collective imaginaries and material conditions. The session interrogates how aesthetic strategies, emerging technologies, and creative speculation participate in scripting the technological, social, and cultural futures we come to inhabit.

Ahmet Kaan Bayram
Ahmet Meriç Kara
Ayşe Rana Sermet
Ceren Çavuş
Eylül Efe
Haluk Erdem Tanargun
Nurdila Mazıcı
Oguz Ülgen Tunç

During the “Suyumuz” events organized by the Goethe-Institut İzmir between 11–13 November, an exhibition also featured a poster project designed by the students of the Izmir University of Economics, Department of Visual Communication Design. Coordinated by our faculty member Emre Yıldız, the “Naßstadt” poster project aims to foreground sustainable water consumption and ecological awareness within urban spaces in the context of urban culture and personal experience. Centering the close relationship that the city of Izmir has with water, the project seeks to heighten perceptual awareness through conceptual poster designs. In addition to approaches that visualize individual expressions about water, the series also includes informative and cautionary narratives. Designed by students:
