EU agrees to simplify AI rules to boost innovation
7.05.2026 the European Parliament and Council of the European Union reached a provisional agreement to reform the AI Act, part of the Omnibus on AI simplification package.
While the law has not yet been formally amended, there is a race against the clock to ensure the official regulation is adopted before the original applicability date of August 2, 2026.
Here’s the breakdown of what actually matters for business:
✅Delay of enforcement date for high-risk AI systems: from 2 August 2026 (in law today) to 2 December 2027 (for AI systems listed in Annex III) and 2 August 2028 (for AI systems covered by Annex I). These dates will be fixed, irrespective of the availability of standards and guidelines.
✅ Manufacturers have achieved a significant victory; industrial technology will primarily revert to the Machinery Regulation concerning health and safety. This approach aims to prevent companies from being overwhelmed by redundant regulations and excessive paperwork.
✅ The EU has implemented strict ethical guidelines for AI content. A total ban on AI-generated non-consensual sexual content and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) will take effect on December 2, 2026. Furthermore, the grace period for watermarking and detecting AI-generated output has been reduced, and compliance is now expected by late 2026.
✅ Organizations are allowed to process sensitive personal data more thoroughly to detect and correct algorithmic bias.
The deal should be formally adopted in the coming weeks. While everyone is talking about the new dates, the core logic of the law hasn’t changed. The EU is trying to pivot away from being a regulatory trap to a place where innovation can actually scale, provided the safety rails stay on.
