HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT IS BETTER TO UPGRADE A LAPTOP OR PURCHASE A NEW ONE?

Before investigating the option of upgrades or replacement, it is advised that users clean up their computer softwares to try and speed up their system.

With the average lifespan of a laptop being between two to five years, it can be really difficult to spend a significant amount of money to replace a unit that can still function if it only had a few upgrades.

To get a better idea of if one should upgrade or replace their aging laptop computer, i have put together a list of the various components within the laptop that may be upgraded. This will give you a better idea if it is feasible to upgrade your laptop or if you should instead replace it.

What are OEM computer components?

While many consumers may not be familiar with what an OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer is, they are becoming more and more common. This is particulary true due to a rise in online shopping.
An OEM is a product from a manufacturer that is sold without the retail packaging to system integrators and retailers for purchase in or with a completed computer system.
A good example can be seen by comparing between an OEM and retail hard drive.
The retail version can be reffered to as a kit because it includes with it the drive cables, installation instructions, warranty cards and any software packages used to help configure or run the drive.

The OEM version of the drive will only include the hard drive in a sealed anti-static bag with no other materials. Sometimes this will be refered to as Bare drive

HAVE YOU HEARD OF A REFURBISHED COMPUTER?
Did you know you could save big by buying yourself one?
If your answer is NO for the two questions then read on.

Refurbished computers typically fall into categories.
The 1st type have failed a QUALITY CONTROL check during manufacturing.
The manufacturer will rebuild it to pass quality control instead of disposing it off but sells it at a discounted price.

The other type is a rebuilt computer from a customer likely due to component failure.

Your next question will be, ARE THEY REALLY SAFE TO BUY?

Yes. But the buyer should always discuss the following with the seller.

COST.
Cost is the primary reason people purchase refurbished desktops and laptops. A refurbished PC can be found for modest discounts at between 10 and 25% European Market and almost 50% discount Ugandan Market off the retail prices with similar warranty as the new ones.

WARRANTIES.
The key to any refurbished computer system is the warranty.These are products were returned due to a defect. Anyone with manufacturer parts or certified replacements should give you a warranty.

RETURN POLICIES.
Becuase of the nature of the refurbished systems, you have to be careful of the return and exchange policies offered by a seller.

Dear Ugandans, always say that for furniture or even clothes but not for computers.

Relative to many other consumer goods, computers tend to have a short lispan.

This isnt because the products arent functional but because of the ever increasing PERFORMANCE and generally downward trend in PRICING of new technologies.

This means that consumers may have a computer peripheral and other devices that may just be a few years old but they dont need any more.
It seems kind of pointless to keep them around if they arent used.
