PART 3 OF 3 | THEIR STORIES WILL NOT BE LOST

Recorded in Lancaster County in January 1865.
Preserved for future generations in 2025.

These Civil War military discharge records document the service of soldiers who fought in some of the most significant battles of the Civil War, including Gettysburg, Second Bull Run, Petersburg, Rappahannock Station, and many others handwritten into the margins by the Recorder more than 160 years ago.

Today, thanks to the commitment of the Lancaster County Recorder of Deeds, these historical Army discharge records have been archivally preserved and protected for the future.

This Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifice, courage, and service behind every page.

Because behind every record is a story.
And behind every story is a hero.

Protect the record. Preserve the history.

PART 2 OF 3 | PRESERVING MORE THAN PAPER

By the time these Civil War military discharge records arrived for preservation, many of the pages showed signs of age, edge damage, tears, and paper deterioration after more than 160 years of use and storage.

In 2026, the Lancaster County Recorder of Deeds made the decision to preserve these historic Army discharge records so the stories they contain are not lost to time.

Every page is carefully stabilized, repaired, and archivally protected to help preserve both the physical record and the handwritten history recorded inside the margins.

These are more than military records.

They are firsthand connections to the soldiers who served, the battles they fought, and the history they helped shape.

This Memorial Day, we honor their sacrifice and preserve the stories they left behind.

Protect the record. Preserve the history.

PART 1 OF 3 | THE BATTLES WERE WRITTEN IN THE MARGIN

More than 160 years ago, the Lancaster County Recorder preserved the military discharge record of Civil War Captain George C. Eckert of Company D, 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry.

But hidden in the margin was something extraordinary.

Handwritten beside the official discharge was a list of battles where he served during the Civil War:
Gettysburg.
Second Bull Run.
Rappahannock Station.
Jerusalem Plank Road.
And many more.

These fragile Army discharge records are now part of a preservation project commissioned by the Lancaster County Recorder of Deeds in 2026 to help safeguard this history for future generations.

This Memorial Day weekend, we’re honored to share the story behind these remarkable records and the work being done to preserve them.

Protect the record. Preserve the history.

What a great week at the NYSACC Conference in Rochester, New York!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Revolution Data Systems booth to meet Zachary Goforth and Ryan Chapman. We truly enjoyed connecting with County Clerks and staff from across New York and hearing about the historical records that still need to be preserved and digitized.

Many of these New York County Clerks are responsible for protecting records that document the history, growth, and foundation of their communities. From early deed books and handwritten records to oversized maps and archival volumes, these offices continue the important work of safeguarding these historical collections and protecting the history of the communities they serve.

We enjoyed sharing how Revolution Data Systems partners with Clerks’ offices through preservation, custom bindery, digitization, and human-verified indexing to help safeguard these records while improving access and searchability for future generations.

Thank you, NYSACC, for a fantastic conference and warm welcome. We’re already looking forward to the next conference!
