I left the kids alone for one weekend… I thought they’d be fine on their own…

We did a shootout on male vocals with 3 microphones: a vintage Neumann U87, an ADK Munich M-7 T-FET, and a Mic & Mod M87. The results were surprising and exciting. Every time I take the time to do a scientific comparison of recording equipment I come away with new understandings, and sometimes dispelled misconceptions. And there is always more that can be learned … by using different sources, different mic placements, etc etc. Big thanks to and for going on this journey. And thank you !

Who can resist a red sparkle finish? I bought this snare drum for about $100, mostly for its looks, but as a studio tool it always felt kind of “meh” to me. So with the cost of 2 heads, a set of wide snare wires, and some purple grosgrain ribbon (on brand), plus some elbow grease it now has personality, a deep tone, and a variety of usable sounds! Audio is from the iPhone - obviously under a mic the differences will be more dramatic.

I love instruments that have a special character - not only in their sound but in the way you play them. These tend to inspire new and interesting ideas. This is our Hammond Chord Organ from the 1950’s. You might know Hammond as the manufacturer of the B-3 organ - an electro-mechanical tone wheel machine. But the Chord Organ operates on a completely different design - it’s actually a tube synthesizer. It has accordion style buttons for the left hand, a knee bar to control volume, and it’s a ton of fun.

Towards the end of 2025 I had the unique opportunity to record and mix an album for Mike Tamburo That album is out now and, really, something you should know about and hear for yourself. It’s powerful stuff and I would love for you to get to experience it. It’s called The Heavy Music, and is available everywhere: https://soundseternal.com/

Mike set up here in Wondersmith Audio, with a rig approximately 18’ wide and nearly 10’ tall comprised of incredible gongs, bronze plates, metal rods, and various other metal - close to 1000lbs of it - plus a dizzying array of mallets, sticks, and other tools of the trade. Like nothing I had ever seen, let alone recorded.

If you’re new to this, you might see the photos and develop a narrow idea of what this is about - meditative new-agey music or something to that effect. If you make those assumptions, you will miss out.

It IS meditative, but also, you can bang your head to it. The sounds Mike makes are at times thunderous/violent/ominous and heavy. Sometimes the thick blanket of overtones coming off a 40” gong and pulsing every molecule of the air feels like a Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath) power chord crashing into you. At other times you’ll hear sounds as delicate as anything you might find in a nighttime forest or other quiet place in nature.

I’ve listened to the album in my studio with intense focus and a quiet environment but also while navigating traffic on the highway in my Mazda. It holds up in both scenarios.

Mike is an artist, technician, and probably a sorcerer. He is also an absolute sweetheart of a person who tours relentlessly and wants to share this music far and wide. As for my role in the album - all I did was try not to mess up the magic, and I think I succeeded in that. Big thanks to ADK Microphones for helping make that possible! I hope you enjoy The Heavy Music, and check Mike out if he comes to your area.
