Alkaline Zinc-air provides the highest energy density of any battery system available on the market, and at a very low cost. This advantage derives from the use of oxygen as a reagent for the cathode. It allows the zinc-air cell to be filled with more zinc "fuel", the only material consumed during discharge. This increase in the amount of anode material allows the cell to provide up to 8 times more capacity than conventional zinc anode systems that must contain its oxidant inside the cell. For example, alkaline cells store oxygen in the form of manganese dioxide, what supposes approximately 60% of the weight of the cell. In other technologies, batteries contain more or less the same amount of anode material as cathode, so their useful life is limited by the material that is consumed first.
