Today we remember Mahalia Jackson on what would have been her 115th birthday.

Born in New Orleans in 1911, she grew up singing in church and carried that sound all the way to Chicago and then to the whole world. They called her the Queen of Gospel, and she never sang anything but songs of faith.

At the March on Washington in 1963, she sang before Dr. King spoke. As he set his notes aside, she called out to him, "Tell them about the dream, Martin." Five years later, she sang "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" at his funeral.

She passed on January 27, 1972, at 60. Her voice still fills the room wherever someone needs to be carried.

We honor Mahalia Jackson, who sang a whole people a little higher.

Today we remember Pelé on what would have been his 86th birthday.

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in a small town in Brazil, he learned the game kicking a sock stuffed with newspaper because his family could not afford a ball. By 17 he was a world champion, and he went on to win three World Cups, the only player ever to do so.

Here in America, he brought the beautiful game home with the New York Cosmos in the 1970s, filling stadiums and inspiring a generation of kids to pick up a ball for the first time.

We honor Pelé, the King of football, whose joy on the field reminded the whole world what it looks like to play with love.

Today we remember Dizzy Gillespie on what would have been his 109th birthday.

Born John Birks Gillespie in Cheraw, South Carolina, the youngest of nine children, he taught himself trumpet and went on to help build a whole new language for jazz. Alongside Charlie Parker, he gave the world bebop, with songs like "A Night in Tunisia," "Salt Peanuts," and "Groovin' High."

You knew him by the beret, the glasses, the puffed cheeks, and that trumpet with the bell bent toward the sky. Behind the joy and the jokes was a generous teacher who brought Afro-Cuban rhythms into American jazz and carried the music around the world.

We honor Dizzy Gillespie, a genius who made brilliance look like play, and whose sound still lifts every horn that follows.

Today we remember LaWanda Page on what would have been her 106th birthday.

Born Alberta Richmond on October 19, 1920, right here in Ohio in Cleveland, she grew up in St. Louis alongside a schoolmate named Redd Foxx. Years later the two of them gave America Aunt Esther, the Bible-toting, sharp-tongued sister-in-law who could stop Fred Sanford cold with one look. "Watch it, sucker!" still makes whole families laugh.

Long before television, she worked the Chitlin' Circuit as a fire dancer and comic, and she became known as the Queen of Comedy. Through all of it, she spoke up for fair pay and equal opportunity for Black performers.

We honor LaWanda Page, a Cleveland daughter who made the country laugh and never let anyone forget her worth.

Today we remember Chuck Berry on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Born October 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, he took rhythm and blues and gave it a new voice, a new swagger, and a guitar line the whole world learned by heart. "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," and "Johnny B. Goode" became the blueprint for everything that followed, and in 1986 he was among the very first artists welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A century after his birth, every young player who picks up a guitar is still, in some way, playing his song. We honor the Father of Rock and Roll, and the joy he set loose in all of us.

Today we remember Art Tatum on what would have been his 117th birthday.

Born October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, he lost most of his sight as a child and learned the piano by ear. What came out of his hands was so fast, so rich, and so full of invention that the greatest musicians of his day came just to watch him play. Generations of jazz pianists still measure themselves against him.

We honor an Ohio son whose music proved there was no limit to what two hands could say.

Today we remember Dick Gregory on what would have been his 94th birthday.

Born October 12, 1932, in St. Louis, he walked into white comedy clubs with a microphone and told the truth about racism until the room had to laugh and listen. He marched, he fasted, he ran for office, and he never stopped insisting that America could be better than it was.

We honor the comic who made courage look like a punch line, and the activist who never put the mic down.

Today we remember Thelonious Monk on what would have been his 109th birthday.

Born October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and raised in New York, he played the piano like no one before him. His songs, like "'Round Midnight," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Blue Monk," helped give birth to modern jazz and are still played in clubs and classrooms around the world.

Happy birthday, Monk. The music keeps swinging.

Today we remember Mike Ditka, who passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born October 18, 1939, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, "Iron Mike" carried the grit of a steel town into everything he did. He changed the tight end position forever with the Chicago Bears and became the first tight end ever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

As head coach, he led the 1985 Bears to a victory in Super Bowl XX and gave Chicago memories that will be passed down for generations. Tough, passionate, and larger than life, he was a champion as a player and as a coach, and he never stopped loving the game or the city that loved him back.

Rest easy, Coach.

Today we remember John Lennon on what would have been his 86th birthday.

Born October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, he gave the world songs that still ask us to imagine something better. Through The Beatles and beyond, his music carried love, peace, and honesty into millions of homes, and it still does.

Rest easy, John. The dream lives on.
