In order to help prevent the list of mass shootings in the United States from adding yet another casualty, lawmakers have debated many different methods of gun control. Advocating for a mass reduction in gun ownership ignores the fear many citizens have of people illegally obtaining and using fi****ms, while promoting the idea that the market should be flooded with legally obtained fi****ms in ord
er to deter crime simply fails to recognize that the majority of mass shootings are perpetrated by the theft of these legally purchased fi****ms. Here at Smart Gun Systems, our solution to this epidemic consists of a multi-lateral approach that intertwines the use tiny radio broadcasting and receiving units and accelerometer modules with a wide variety of fi****ms. Not only would these fi****ms be able to be regulated far more efficiently, it would be in society’s interest to see many of these modified fi****ms sold. One of our missions is to prevent the next Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, or Columbine by creating a balanced approach where people would not have to give up their guns, but rather make guns that cannot be discharged in schools. One of the more underrepresented tragedies in this country is the su***de by firearm rate. Another of our missions is to help prevent firearm related su***des, especially those perpetrated by children and teens. In 2010 alone, more than 19,000 of the over 30,000 gun-related deaths in the US were a result of su***de. Our product is designed so that it can detect if it is being held and/or moved. If a firearm is registered as being moved, the owner will be sent an email and/or text message alerting him that his firearm is being moved. If it is authorized, he simply will only need to ignore the message, however, if he is unaware of this movement he may choose to remotely disable the weapon. This technology would help children who suffer from depression and other mental ailments from taking their own lives and possibly the lives of others. Unfortunately, there is no immediate cure for the gun violence epidemic, however there are many plausible long term solutions to help alleviate this problem. The more our product is used, the safer Americans will be, and as the ratio of our fi****ms to other “non-smart” fi****ms increases, the threat America’s school children face from gun violence will decrease. This effect can be accelerated if we were to endorse programs such as gun buy-back events that take many unsafe fi****ms off the street and further increase this ratio. If we are to be serious about keeping children safe in school, then our number-one priority must be to get potentially dangerous guns out of the hands of the public and replace them with smart-designed weapons.
