"I almost paid it. It looked exactly like our vendor's invoice." 😬
A local business owner told us this last week. The email had the right logo and the right contact name, and it referenced a real past order. The only difference was one letter in the email address, plus a request to send payment to a "new bank account."
These scams spike every year between now and the holidays. Busy season plus rushed approvals gives scammers an opening.
3 quick checks before you pay any invoice:
-Look closely at the sender's email address, not just the name
-If the payment details changed, call the vendor at a number you already have, not one in the email
-Turn on multi-factor authentication for your email, so scammers can't hijack your own account to send these
One phone call can save thousands.
