Windows 11 had been out for a few months now and for those of us in the Windows Insider Program, a lot longer. I receive questions rather frequently about Windows 11 and wanted to mention them here in hopes it will help some of you.
Q: How much does it cost to upgrade to Windows 11?
A: Nothing, if you qualify and meet Microsoft’s minimum system requirements.
Q: How do I know if I meet the requirements?
A: In “Settings” go to “Windows Update”, There should be a callout on the page to have Microsoft check your system to see if you meet the minimum system requirements.
Q: Does it slow my computer down?
A: In my experience, no. I’ve tested Windows 11 on older equipment and found the opposite to be true.
Q: How different is Windows 11 and will it take a long time to learn?
A: It is a little different and there is a little learning curve. For the most part everything is where one expects it to be. If not, a simple search will find the setting or feature you are looking for.
Q: What is it comparable to?
A: Love this question. Having worked with Windows, Apple, Android and Linux for many years I think Windows 11 adopts features from all of them. For as long as GUI’s (graphical user interface) have been out, how much more creative can one be?
Q: How long will Microsoft support Windows 10 if I do not or can not upgrade?
A: Windows 10 Home and Pro will be supported until October 14th 2025 at which point Microsoft does not plan on releasing any more feature or, more importantly, security updates.
Q: If I do not meet the minimum system requirements can I still upgrade to Windows 11?
A: Message me on this one, we can explore options on a case by case basis.
Q: Why would I want to upgrade to Windows 11?
A: That answer depends on how you use your computer and how long you want to keep it and is different for most everyone. For the most part, personally, I think it’s a little more feature rich. For the way I work with multiple desktops I find it more convenient, faster and more intuitive. You will get different answers from different people but I feel it makes me more efficient and streamlines my workflow.
Q: Why don’t I just buy a new computer with Windows 11 already on it?
A: Great question. Most people don’t need a new system with more speed. Most of what we do is web based and a faster system won’t provide much benefit. Again, It’s all about how you use your device. New may be your best option. For me and a lot of you, I run the wheels off my equipment and prefer not to contribute to the ever growing e-waste problem. If I can get a few more years and not have to transition to a new system, I’ll go that route. Lazy maybe? If you do upgrade then please recycle responsibly.
I hope this helps. If you have any further questions please feel to reach out, I’m always happy to help.
