The worst thing you can do after a great networking conversation is follow up with a sponsorship pitch. So don't.

Most drivers make one of two mistakes after a networking event. They never follow up at all. Or they follow up immediately with a deck and an ask. Both kill the opportunity before it ever had a chance.

Here's what you do instead.

Connect online within 24 hours. Write a personal note referencing something specific from your conversation. Then ask for a one-on-one meeting. Not to talk about your race team. To learn about their business.

During that meeting, ask questions. Listen. Let the passion for racing come out naturally. Do not present a sponsor deck. Do not bring up money.

Wait for them to ask how they can help or ask specific questions about your race team. That's your moment. And when it comes, flip it.

"You helping us is actually us helping you."

Social media posts and tags are part of a growing online presence. Direct connections to an existing partner network and community. You are not asking for a handout. You are offering a marketing partnership with a real return attached to it.

That's how every single sponsor on Hornet Nation Racing came on board. Not from a pitch. From a relationship.

Sponsors don't write checks for race teams. They write checks for people they trust.

Every expert will give you a 12 step framework for networking. Scripts. Conversation starters. Elevator pitches. The perfect way to work a room.

I walked up and said hello. It worked.

Before you think I have some kind of natural gift for this, I don't. I just didn't overthink it. And that is exactly what most drivers do when they think about walking into a Chamber of Commerce meeting or a local business mixer. They overthink it until they talk themselves out of going.

So here's the only plan you actually need.

Don't be selfish. That's it. Everything else flows from that one decision before you walk through the door.

Here's what selfish looks like in a networking room:

- Waiting for your turn to talk instead of actually listening
- Mentally rehearsing your pitch while someone else is still speaking
- Steering every conversation back to what you need

Here's what giving looks like:

- Genuine attention to the person in front of you
- Asking questions and actually caring about the answers
- Making the conversation about them, not about you or your race team

The best networkers aren't the best talkers. They're the best listeners. When you genuinely focus on the person in front of you, your story comes out naturally. You don't have to pitch a race team. They ask about it.

You don't need a script. You need to show up, say hello, and care about the person in front of you. Everything else follows from that.

Here is the latest article from DDR Motorsports where they discuss two very critical safety improvements they added to the car this offseason.

Short track racing has a way of keeping you honest. We all chase speed, invest in horsepower, and spend countless hours dialing in our setup—but none of that matters if we are not taking safety seriously. At our team, driver safety has been a major focus for me heading into the 2026 season. The ra...

You already know you belong in the room. So what's actually stopping you?

It's not your results. It's not your follower count. It's a story you keep telling yourself about who belongs in a business room and who doesn't.

Three lies I hear constantly: "I don't have anything to offer a real business." "Nobody in that room cares about racing." "I'll go once I have more credibility."

Every one of those is a lie.

Waiting for perfect credentials is how you wait forever. Unique beats polished every single time in a room full of people selling the same things.

The room isn't the problem. The story you're telling yourself about the room is.

Tomorrow I'm going to give you the only networking plan you actually need. It's simpler than you think.

You already know you belong in the room. So what's actually stopping you?

It's not your results. It's not your follower count. It's not the size of your team or your budget or your trophy case. It's a story you keep telling yourself about who belongs in a business room and who doesn't.

And I hear the same three versions of that story over and over. "I don't have anything to offer a real business." "Nobody in that room cares about racing." "I'll go once I have more results, more credibility, more of something."

Let me be straight with you. Every one of those is a lie.

Waiting for perfect credentials is how you wait forever. There is no finish line you cross that suddenly makes you ready. The drivers who are landing sponsors right now are not the ones with the most wins. They are the ones who showed up before they felt ready.

Here is what most people in a business networking room have in common. They are all selling something, and most of them are selling something that sounds exactly like what the person next to them is selling. Insurance. Financial services. Marketing. IT support. The room is full of it.

Then you walk in. You own a race team. You have a story nobody else in that room has. Unique beats polished every single time in a room full of people fighting to stand out. You are not competing with anyone in there. You are the only one of you.

The real blocker is not a lack of credibility. It's the fear of not belonging. And the only way through that fear is to show up anyway, just once, and watch what actually happens when you tell someone you own a race team.

The real blocker is not a lack of credibility. It's fear of not belonging. And the only way through that fear is to show up anyway, just once, and watch what actually happens when you tell someone you own a race team.

The room is not the problem.

The story you are telling yourself about the room is the problem.
Tomorrow, I am going to give you the exact framework for walking into any networking event with a plan so you never stand there wondering what to say or who to talk to.

You spend money to go racing. That makes you a business owner. Full stop.

I know that feels like a stretch. Sit with it anyway.

Because the way you see yourself determines where you show up and who you talk to. And most race teams are leaving serious money on the table because of a self-perception problem, not a sponsorship problem.

Look at the hats you are already wearing:

- CEO
- Marketing director
- Operations manager
- PR team
- Accountant
- Logistics coordinator

Every small business owner I know wears every one of those hats. You are not different from them. You just also wear a helmet on weekends.

Business rooms are full of decision makers with marketing budgets who have never once considered a race team as a partner. That is not a problem. That is an opportunity sitting there completely untouched.

But you have to believe you belong in those rooms first.

Stop waiting for permission. You already do.

Drop a comment below. Do you see your race team as a business?
