Already have an IT person and wondering whether to hand everything to a provider or bring in help alongside them?

Fully managed means an outside team runs all of it. Co-managed means they work with your internal person, splitting the work so each side does what it's best at.

Done right, co-managed gives your IT person a team behind them instead of leaving them alone on an island. It's built to keep them, not replace them. Here's how to tell which one fits.

If a server died or ransomware hit on a Tuesday morning, two questions decide how much it costs you: how long can you afford to be down, and how much recent work can you afford to lose?

That's the difference between RTO and RPO. They sound similar but they're solved by different tools, and both have to be good for your plan to hold up.

Start small: pick your three most important systems and write down both numbers. The surprises alone are worth the exercise.

Staying with an IT provider you've outgrown usually isn't loyalty. It's the fear that switching will crash email or lose your files.

The good news: a careful transition avoids all of that. The smooth switches we handle across Alaska and Hawaii all share one trait. Nothing important happens by surprise.

That means documenting your setup first, confirming you control your own accounts and domain, running new tools alongside the old before cutting over, then testing that backups actually restore.

If a provider promises to switch you by Friday without learning your setup first, that's a warning sign.

Ever signed an IT contract, then gotten hit with a "surprise" invoice for something you thought was covered? You're not alone.

Most managed IT plans bundle monitoring, help desk, core security, and backup management into the monthly fee. What often costs extra: hardware, software licensing, migrations, onboarding, and after-hours work.

Our guide gives you a map for reading any proposal, so you can spot where the extras are hiding before you sign.

"Will you make us compliant?" It's one of the first questions regulated businesses ask us, and the honest answer isn't what a sales pitch wants to give: no IT company can make you compliant.

A good partner does carry a heavy load, the technical safeguards, backups that actually restore, and the evidence you hand an auditor. But your policies, your staff training, and your breach notifications stay with you.

Here's where the line really sits, and how to spot a provider who's being honest about it.

If you only did one security thing this year, turn on multi-factor authentication. A stolen password alone shouldn't be enough to get into your email, files, or bank login.

That's the top of a short list we put together for small businesses: six controls that stop most attacks without a six-figure budget. MFA, modern endpoint protection, removing admin rights, patching, tested backups, and training your team to spot phishing.

Start at the top, get it done, move down. 👇

Your email, files, and Teams chats all live in Microsoft's cloud. So Microsoft backs them up, right? Mostly no, and they say so themselves.

Under Microsoft's shared-responsibility model, they protect the platform. You're responsible for the data. If a file gets deleted, an account is hacked, or ransomware syncs into SharePoint, Microsoft faithfully keeps those bad changes too.

Recycle bins and retention policies help for a day or two, but they aren't real backup. The first step is simple: find out if anything is backing up your Microsoft 365 outside of Microsoft.

You know the person. The one who keeps all your tech running, whose head holds every password and every workaround. They've been great. But can one human really carry cybersecurity, cloud, backups, compliance, and the daily help desk grind all at once?

When they're on vacation, buried in tickets, or the thing they never had time to secure gets exploited, you find out how much was resting on one set of shoulders.

The good news: outgrowing the one tech person doesn't mean firing them. Co-managed IT keeps them and gives them backup. Here's how to spot the signs. 👇

Getting IT quotes and wondering why no two providers price the same way? You're not imagining it.

Some charge per user, some per device, some a flat monthly fee. Each one behaves differently as your team grows or shrinks, and the "cheapest" headline number often isn't the better deal once you see what's actually included.

We break down all three models, where each one tends to bite, and how to compare offers like for like.

Ever sat through a security pitch and left buried in acronyms? EDR, MDR, SOC, SIEM. Here's the short version:

EDR is the guard on each computer. SIEM is the central logbook. SOC is the team of humans watching around the clock. MDR is the service that ties them all together.

The catch: a "24/7 SOC" on a quote can mean a local team that knows you, or an anonymous offshore queue. Big difference.

Got a quote you're unsure about? Bring it to us and we'll translate it plainly.
