Radiation can be challenging to localize when in complex environments, especially when using conventional handheld radiation detectors to manually scan areas of interest.

Having a portable radiation imager simplifies the process: they typically require only 1-2 measurements to locate the position of the source, without the need for operators to enter potentially hazardous spaces. In the case of our photo of the month, an H3D H420 gamma imaging spectrometer was used to identify that one of the hottest spots at an industrial site was a pile of innocuous garbage bags filled with objects that were contaminated with Ra-226.

Following last month's photo of the experimental drone, take a look at our July photo, which shows an experimental method of drone-based radiation imaging.

You might have seen other photos we've shared of H3D's radiation imaging from drones, which looks a lot like the same images from our other radiation imaging spectrometers. This is great for fast results in the field, but since H3D is always looking to add more capabilities to our products, we are also experimenting with other real-time and post-processed results.

This photo shows all of the radiation sources measured during the drone's flight. Radiation images were made from M400iC data using a maximum likelihood reconstruction with a total variation penalty. These were continuously imported into Google Earth, which knew the drone's position based on GPS information from a GNSS/INS antenna.

There were three boxes: one with Cs-137, one with Co-60 and Ba-133, and one empty box. The measurement was completed in under 7 minutes, with a drone height of about 5 m.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of our latest R&D collaboration efforts for June’s Photo of the Month. This new style of UAV is perfect for mounting the M400iC and imaging radiation from high above the ground. The M400iC can be integrated onto any drone that can support its 1 kg, and does not require GPS to localize radiation.

We’re proud to share exciting news from H3D!

H3D has been awarded a $1.2 million contract by armasuisse, the Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement, to deliver 10 H420 high‑resolution radiation imaging spectrometers.

The H420 is built with H3D’s 3D CZT technology and is designed to perform real‑time gamma‑ray imaging and offer well-rounded performance in demanding field environments.

See our A401 radioisotope identification device (RIID) in action in our Photo of the Month! Here, the A401 is being used in an operation by a group specializing in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) response. This RIID is a great addition to the EOD toolkit because it offers laboratory-quality results for isotope identification in a lightweight, ruggedized form. The A401 reduces the need to take data back to a secondary analysis station, making operations faster, safer, and cheaper.

We can't believe it's been nearly a year since H3D's CZT detectors launched to the International Space Station! Check out this article written by our President & Chief Operating Officer, Michael Streicher, summarizing the launch, the mission, the history, and the future of space-based 3D CZT.

"3D-CZT offers off-the-shelf instrumentation to study gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae. After operating for nearly a year, the project has successfully demonstrated that 3D-CZT detectors work well in a space environment. The imaging capabilities of 3D-CZT allow physicists to further pinpoint the location of GRBs to tune other instruments in that direction to study secondary emissions from GRB-induced events."
