Is your boat's AI just assisting you, or is it starting to make the decisions? 🤔

Right now, commercial autonomous vessels like the Yara Birkeland are navigating complex routes with minimal human intervention. To regulate this, the IMO is working on a global framework for autonomous ships by 2027.

But here is the interesting part 🧠: the exact same technology—sensor fusion and real-time hazard detection—is already arriving on recreational boats as consumer conveniences. We are seeing it in hazard-sensing cameras and assisted docking features like Brunswick’s Simrad AutoCaptain.

The commercial regulations assume highly trained crews and shore-based oversight. Weekend boaters generally carry far less training, yet they are getting access to commercial-grade tech.

Would you trust AI to call the shots at your helm? 🛥️⚡

We are officially entering the era of "routes that can see".

The same sensor fusion technology used on commercial ships (radar, LiDAR, AIS, and thermal cameras) is landing on mobile helm displays. Real-time hazard detection—from debris to marine life—can now trigger dynamic rerouting right on your screen. Tools like SeaLegs AI are even providing automated "Go, Caution, or Avoid" recommendations.

As a USCG Captain, I’m all for technology that reduces fatigue and flags hazards early. But with mandatory international autonomous regulations still years away (~2032), decision support is only as good as the captain standing watch.

Would you trust an AI algorithm to steer your boat through a crowded harbor? 🚤⚡

New research on Improved Artificial Potential Field (IAPF) navigation models nearby vessels as virtual force fields. Instead of following a rigid, pre-set line, the boat continuously recalculates a safe path in real-time while strictly following COLREGs right-of-way rules.

As a USCG Captain tracking this tech, the real question isn't whether AI can navigate busy waters—the tech is advancing fast (the maritime AI market is expected to reach $139.4 billion by 2034).

The real question is: When does the captain step in? 🤔

Buying a used boat? Don't make the critical mistake of letting the old MMSI number get reassigned incorrectly.

Learn how to safely transfer and test your vessel's VHF radio identity. 👇

Too many boaters don't realize that an MMSI belongs to the radio/vessel, NOT the captain. Leaving an old owner's info attached to your Digital Selective Calling (DSC) radio means that in a true emergency, search and rescue will be looking for the wrong person and the wrong boat. 😳

🛠️ How to Handle it Right:
➡️ Don't wait: Handle the MMSI transfer during closing. It's way easier than chasing down a previous owner months later.
➡️ RTFM (Read the Fine Manual): Check your specific radio's manual for reset steps, as every manufacturer handles MMSI programming differently.
➡️ Run a Silent Test: Use the USCG test number 003669999 via your radio's DSC menu to verify it works instantly without triggering a false alarm.

🔑 Bonus? A properly assigned MMSI lets your friends and family track your voyages seamlessly on MarineTraffic! 🗺️
