This 1480 book from Nuremberg on eBay was printed in red and black, but the versals (large drop-caps) are hand painted, and thus a thicker, brighter red that the printed red text. Lombardic capitals were the most common style of rubricated (Latin ‘rubricat’: ‘marked in red’) in early printing.
