Statement X: Statement on Black Tech Leadership

Excerpt:
The obstacles one has to overcome to become a leader is quite the accomplishment.

It is an honor, badge of achievement, and a meaningful way to serve people while giving back for the overall mission and goals of an organization or company. It is also a breeding ground for greed, arrogance, self-centeredness, and fragile egos.

Most of us can point to an example of good leaders and not so good leaders. They can encourage you, open doors that may be out of your reach, and catapult you to new horizons with one sign off.

However, they can also determine your experience and whether or not you succeed or fail. The relationship is a necessary one but has been misconstrued in certain areas of progress and quite frankly, has set us back in some aspects...

Statement IX: Statement on Gender Disparities in Tech

Excerpt:
The gender gap in tech is something that is relevant throughout the industry.

It is important to note that black women make up for more managing positions than black men, but black men tend to hold higher executive positions (62%) than black women (38%).

This trend is changing and black women, despite all odds, are closing the gap. With this being said, it is vital to discuss how women operate within the workplace and the biases that are still faced today. Even though progress has been made, other improvements still remain to be achieved...

Statement VIII: Statement on Tech Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) in Washington, DC

Excerpt:
Black Gov Techโ€™s origin story came from the inspiration of employee resource groups. When working within tech companies and consulting firms, especially within the Washington DC area, the need for community not only boosts employee morale but overall productivity and profits for the company at large.

The need for these groups are vital and they are one of the beautiful things about the ecosystem of which we operate in.

Pre 2020, these groups were mostly bundled together with other deemed racially marginalized groups (such as LatinX, Asian, etc.), creating a diluted and borderline anti corporate coalition funded by the group majority...

Statement VII: The Invisible Hand in Tech: Overrepresentation in Entry, Underrepresentation in Management

Excerpt:
When moving up in Corporate America, the old adage in our community is to work twice as hard and keep your head down until your opportunity comes.

Theoretically, letting your work speak for itself is rooted in ideology that coincides with meritocracy. Those who have experienced this path understand that the nuances are much more intricate and detailed than that. It requires a combination of positioning, timing, perception, and competence within the role and organization to properly succeed in tech...

Statement VI: HBCU of the Future: Public vs Private Methods of Tech Recruiting, Financial Transparency, and Audit of Leadershipย ๐Ÿ–ค

Excerpt:
Preface: Our HBCUs have a rich history and legacy of creating opportunities when it was not legal nor were there admissions across other higher educational institutions creating a significant barrier to change socioeconomic conditions.

The responsibility is great, as you are often creating the first (or the last) social experiment of a safe haven of the black experience in this country. It takes elements that are global and creates for fabric and society not easily broken; a familial and tribal tie. The relationship between faculty, staff, and students feels often times like a community and life of its own...
