An interesting U.S.-China trade wrinkle today.

The broader trade truce is supposed to run into January, but some legal deadlines tied to export controls and rare-earth supply are still showing November 9 and 10.

For manufacturers, I’d be asking a simple question: if a material gets delayed, which jobs stop first?

That is where good visibility into WIP, material shortages and production priorities starts to matter.

Here's a manufacturing horror story: Your most important machine goes down, and the only person who knows how to fix it is on vacation.

The procedures were never documented. The software is outdated. And the person who originally built the system retired years ago.

For manufacturers, relying on one person's knowledge can turn a minor equipment issue into costly production downtime.

At Ayoka Systems, we help manufacturers modernize aging software, preserve critical operational knowledge, and reduce the risks that come with outdated systems.

Don't let undocumented processes haunt your factory.

Replacing an ERP doesn't automatically fix how a manufacturer operates.

IndustryWeek makes a useful point in a new article: start with the operating process before selecting new software.

If receiving, production and shipping rely on disconnected handoffs today, simply moving those steps to a new platform can preserve the same delays.

Follow one order all the way through. Find where information is re-entered, approvals stall or people rely on a spreadsheet to fill the gaps. Then decide what your ERP needs to do—and what should connect to it.

Better operations first. Technology second.

If installing software is your first priority, the project can quickly turn into a technology swap carrying over old problems and workarounds.

$950 million for a new Texas solar-cell factory. Caterpillar sales up 17%. Honeywell bringing industrial AI into refinery operations.

There is a lot moving in manufacturing right now.

Today’s Ayoka Manufacturing Daily Briefing also looks at how AI memory demand is affecting the chip market and what is happening with consolidation in chemicals.

Worth a quick read if you want a snapshot of what manufacturers are dealing with this morning:

Intel and SAP just demonstrated autonomous robots receiving warehouse work directly from SAP and reporting the results back when the work is complete.

Pretty interesting direction.

Factories already have machines, PLCs, ERP systems, warehouse systems and a lot of operational data. Getting all of those systems to communicate reliably is where some pretty useful things start becoming possible.

We work on these kinds of connections every day at Ayoka.

Here is how we think about connecting the shop floor to MES, ERP and the rest of the business:

A shipment reaching a U.S. port doesn't mean those parts are ready for production.

FreightWaves reports that nearly 35,700 containers were waiting for rail service at Los Angeles and Long Beach this week, including more than 10,500 that had spent at least nine days at terminals.

For manufacturers relying on imported parts, that's a reminder to follow inbound material all the way to the plant. Keep purchasing, scheduling and customer commitments aligned with realistic arrival dates, not just the vessel's arrival.

Nearly 35,700 import containers were waiting for on-dock trains at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as record cargo volumes, reported railcar shortages slowed inland traffic.

$2.1 billion going into U.S. manufacturing caught my attention.

Re:Build Manufacturing raised the money to expand its manufacturing platform and help launch more industrial companies.

I like that they get involved early in product design. A lot of the decisions that affect cost, quality and how difficult something will be to manufacture happen long before it reaches the factory floor.

There is a lot of capital moving into American manufacturing right now. Let’s see how much of it turns into productive capacity and products shipping out the door.

Volkswagen recently completed a test of driverless vehicle movement at an active logistics site in Germany, according to Manufacturing.net.

What makes that interesting isn't just the automation. The test involved real traffic patterns and interactions with manually driven vehicles.

That matters in any factory. Before automating a task, understand how the work is handled today, especially when something doesn't go as planned. Technology needs to fit the people and processes around it.

The AutoLog project tested automated vehicle logistics in real-world conditions.

Billions of dollars are being committed to new manufacturing capacity right now.

Today’s Ayoka Manufacturing Daily Briefing covers:

• About $3.2B in new UMC semiconductor capacity funding
• Nearly $3B for U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley modernization
• A $4.2B Audi plant in Georgia
• Rising chipmaking-gas demand tied to AI fabs
• A potential new manufacturing route to quantum chips

The investment is impressive, but the real work starts after the announcement.

Plants still have to be staffed, qualified, scheduled, maintained, supplied, and operated reliably.

Capital creates opportunity. Ex*****on turns it into real capacity.

More orders don't always mean more profit.

Fortune reports that UPS has been shifting away from lower-return shipping volume to focus on customers and services that create more value.

That's relevant to manufacturing, too. A large account can look attractive until you count the extra setups, rush requests, engineering changes and shipping exceptions.

Know what each job really costs to deliver before deciding which work to pursue. The goal is to grow margin, not just keep the plant busy.

Brian D***s explains how a focus on higher-value customers is paying off as UPS prepares to hire 100,000 seasonal workers for the holiday rush.
