“Look! It’s a meeple shirt!”

I heard someone say this a couple days ago while I was hiking up Diamond Head, a dormant volcano ring located at the edge of Waikīkī, Hawai’i where I’m vacationing. When someone knows what a meeple is, I know they are a kindred spirit. 🥰 At the same time, I would never say someone who doesn’t know the term isn’t a “true board gamer.”

Earlier today, Dennis of shared that someone accused him of not being a “serious board gamer” because he hadn’t played Brass Birmingham. 😒 With all the thousands of board games out there & all of our varied tastes, there’s no reason to devalue others for what they do or don’t enjoy in the hobby. There’s room for all of us. So that’s my 2 cents on the issue for this #😇MerchMonday.

When a gaming strategy becomes a dead end, we either have to pivot or accept a loss.

For #😇MerchMonday, I’m announcing a design modification to one of my civilization-themed designs. “I Build Worlds in a Day” is replacing “I Build Civilizations in a Day.” Why the change? 🤔 I launched this design more than 5 years ago, but recently when I was adding a new product type & adjusting prices, Amazon flagged the design as infringing on the game called “Civilization.” I tried to explain that “civilization” is a category of games, but my choice was either modify or remove. After considering alternatives such as “culture,” “societies” or “cities,” I then thought of “worlds” & decided that might be even better than “civilizations.” What do you think?

For #😇MerchMonday, I’m excited to share that the car magnets I purchased from my Zazzle shop nearly 6 years ago have a new home! After having a Toyota Corolla for 10+ years, I decided it was time to upgrade. I ended up leasing a new all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5. I was even able to get another red car! 😍

I have to admit that I’m really impressed that these economical car magnets have lasted so long with very little fading (SWIPE to see when they were new on my old car). They never moved when I would go through a car wash. They were a little dirty from the winter weather, but I simply washed them with some dish soap before putting them on my new car. If you’re looking for a fun way to share your love of board games, you should definitely check these out!

For #😇MerchMonday, I’m excited to share the latest logo I designed. This was for .BoardGaming. Kristen & I “met” here on Instagram several years ago, but I’ve also had the pleasure of gaming with her in person at conventions, as well as when I have visited near her. Last fall, she asked me if I’d be interested in designing a logo for her game design business, Orange Horse Games. When she said she wanted an abstract horse head, I didn’t feel up to the task because I am much more comfortable with geometric shapes & typography than drawing animals. 😬 Later, after giving it some more thought, I offered to take a stab at it.

Kristen sent me a couple of photos of her horse that I could use as a guide, & that eased some of my drawing insecurities. I started filling in the head with abstract shapes, but when I was done, I knew it wasn’t a winner. 🫣 I sent it to Kristen anyway as a starting point, as well as some inspiration images I found online. She was drawn to one using rounded overlapping shapes, so I started from scratch, using the 2nd photo of her horse. This time things clicked. 😃 A few more small edits, & we were done. 😊

Why did I share my 1st failed attempt? 🤔 Cooks have been known to say that you should always throw out the 1st pancake. 🥞 I like the idea that it takes at least one try of something to figure it out. I also think it’s good to share that creating things can be hard, no matter how long you’ve been doing something.

If you’re not already following Kristen, go fix that now. She’s a talented game designer whose list of published games gets longer all the time. She started with Dinosaur Exhibit just 4 years ago, & now has more than 10 games out or coming out this year. She’s also a wife, mom & all-around lovely person.
