AI is a big topic these days and something I find myself thinking about constantly. It’s fascinating and mind blowing, but if I’m being honest, all of it just makes me incredibly sad. I know there is real hope in medical advances, research, and productivity and I keep trying to be optimistic, but I’m struggling wayyy too much with the cons. Besides the fact that the creative industry (like my job) is going to dramatically change or even disappear, I’m majorly concerned about environmental impact, the need for more data centers, copyright infringement, job losses, misinformation, privacy, security and so much more. I’m alarmed at the rate at which this is all being unleashed/forced onto the public with zero guardrails or regulations. In this post, I share my top concerns as well as how I plan to work and live in this day and age.

POV: Raising 2 kids, keeping my biz afloat and continuing to search for the ever elusive “balance”.

On any given day you can find me nursing my baby 7-8x and then deciding whether nap times will be used for work, cleaning the house, working out, basic hygiene, lunch, gardening or sitting down and doing absolutely nothing for a hot second. If my oldest is home from daycare then there’s a chance I’ll get a unicorn moment when they’re both napping, but I know never to bank on it. I may not get a break, but at least I’m really loving play/art time lately 🥹

So my life update is: I’m working part-time with my ongoing clients and trying to soak up this wild and beautiful season of motherhood. In other words, I’m trying to have my cake and eat it too. It’s not pretty, but it’s working for our family (shoutout to my husband and medication for getting me through postpartum insanity 🫶🏼). Shoutout to all the other mamas out there too! I SEE YOU!

Carmen will start daycare in the new year so feel free to reach out if you know you’ll have design needs in 2026!

After Hurricane Helene, the true impact of the destruction has finally set in. So many lives were lost, homes were ruined or washed away and the infrastructure has been severely damaged. Our hearts are breaking in Western North Carolina as we absorb and process this disaster.

Small businesses and creatives are the lifeblood of this region and what makes this area so unique and vibrant. The culture, the art, the food, the beer and the people are some of the reasons tourists flock here… especially this time of year. While a lot of businesses were lucky to avoid flooding, tree damage and other structural issues, many are left facing so many unknowns since the water system is under repair and may be for a while. Without running water, many businesses can’t operate and are unsure how to support their staff and keep up with their overhead. There is a lot to navigate with insurance claims, lack of flood insurance, applying for aid and loans, bills, clean up, lost products, and just an overall anxiety about the future and economy in general.

With all this uncertainty, small businesses and creatives are scrambling to figure out a plan. There are SO many GoFundMe’s setup for these types of businesses and it can be overwhelming to know where to go. The region has significant needs, and I know many want to support the individuals who make it unique. This post highlights their individual fundraisers. Some on this list are my clients, some are friends, some are businesses I love or have been following closely during this disaster and others have been shared with me. I’ve also shared a few other nonprofits and organizations that are working directly in the community to provide critical needs like water, food and healthcare.

Please share other businesses and artist’s fundraisers with me so I can add them to the list (you can email me at katie@rotanzdesign). I’ll update as frequently as I can.

Don’t forget to support those that are able to operate too! Thank you in advance for your support.

Presenting a new logo and brand update for Town Farm ! Jenny of Walker Town Farm has been in business for 5 years now, growing gorgeous flowers at her homestead in Black Mountain, NC. I designed her website years ago and loved working with her so I was honored when she asked me to redesign her brand this year. She had outgrown her old logo and was ready to go through my custom process.

Jenny is a farmer and florist specializing in everyday arrangements, CSA bouquet subscriptions, wholesale flowers for florists and she also hosts workshops and U-Pick events. Her goal is to be “beyond organic” using regenerative and sustainable practices, no chemical use, and creating a healthy environment and habitat for her land, birds, insects and pollinators.

To Jenny, the flowers do more than provide beauty, they create joy and help show people how much they care. A bouquet makes things feel special and is an act of love. Her ideal clients prioritize seasonality, want to buy flowers that are growing at that time of year and appreciate her beyond organic approach. This isn’t an upscale floral design... she wants her flowers to be attainable to everyone and not feel high-end or fancy.

Visually, Jenny wanted the logo to be fun and whimsical, homegrown but professional. Fresh and farmy and classic and not upscale or sophisticated. She wanted her brand to feel fun and happy. This is a brand you’re going to see at Farmer’s Markets, not immersed in the wedding industry. Since the word “flowers” isn’t in the business name, we decided to include flowers in the design so people can quickly understand what the farm specializes in. It was also important that they looked like cut flowers and not wild flowers. The color palette gives you that rustic farm look and the hand-drawn flowers provide an organic feel. The sassy (and hilarious) WTF brand mark features a mason jar to hone in on that down-to-earth vibe. Nothing fancy here!

If you’re interested in buying some of her flowers, you’re in luck! She’ll be at the Black Mountain Farmer’s Market Black Mountain Tailgate Market this Saturday, May 4th. You can also check out her website walkertownfarm.com for more buying options.

Today I want to share some more of the inspiration behind my brand refresh and the overarching theme of pollinators and beauty.

Have you ever finished a book and felt deeply moved? Almost like you’re a changed person after reading it? That’s how Braiding Sweetgrass felt for me and it changed the way I view nature. Robin Wall Kimmerer is a botanist that blends Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants.

There was one chapter that stuck out to me called Asters and Goldenrod. Robin wanted to know why asters and goldenrod looked so beautiful together and why they always grew beside each other. She says, “Alone, each is a botanical superlative. Together, the visual effect is stunning. Purple and gold, the heraldic colors of the king and queen of the meadow, a regal procession in complementary colors.” It turns out that this pairing of colors is not only beautiful to humans, but to bees as well. She goes on to say, “We both think they’re beautiful. Their striking contrast when they grow together makes them the most attractive target in the whole meadow, a beacon for bees. Growing together, both receive more pollinator visits than they would if they were growing alone. It’s a testable hypothesis; it’s a question of science, a question of art, and a question of beauty.”

This made me think about a couple things:

1. As a designer, there are a lot of decisions we make that have this same effect for our client’s work. What color combinations, typefaces, and images can we use to draw in more customers for our client’s businesses? Nature can be such a wonderful resource to draw inspiration from because it’s already practicing so many of these visual techniques.

2. It’s helped inspire me to create a space on my website that I’m calling the “Resource Garden” to promote local graphic designers, photographers, writers and other creatives in the Asheville area. Both asters and goldenrod are native to this place and our creative community here is strong. I believe that if we grow together, we all benefit. This part of my website is a work in progress, so stay tuned!!

Big thanks to for this gorgeous image!

When I launched my new website I just let my old blog posts go to the wayside since I hadn't blogged in YEARS. I was leaning towards starting fresh and not carrying the posts over to the new site. Not long after I launched my new site, I received an email from someone asking if I could share an article from my archives since she had found it "enormously helpful". The post she was referring to was a guest post written by Anna Laman called "Why you’re stuck writing your website copy – and how to fix it". I was kinda blown away that someone in another part of the world had bookmarked this article as she was writing the copy for her own site. I'll be honest, it was really good for me to revisit this one too as I edit and update the copy on my site. Writing for your own site is HARD, but Anna shares some really good advice. This inspired me to go through my old posts and bring some back from the archives. So here's the first one! I'll be adding a few more and maybe JUST MAYBE, I'll start blogging again.

Phase I of my new website is live! Is it finished, nope, but if I didn’t launch this now I honestly don’t know when it would happen. While I still have quite a bit of work to do on my site, it’s in a good place. I also had to follow my own advice that I give to my clients: let’s just launch the d*** thing! It’s easy to get cold feet and feel like the website has to be absolutely PERFECT, but the beauty of web design is the ever evolving nature of it. I can improve, update and expand over time.

It’s been a breath of fresh air to get my new brand out in the world and feel proud of my website again. Feel free to check out the live site! rotanzdesign.com
