With over 5,080 miles of track operated by 58 railroads, the network connects ports, manufacturers, and distribution centers across the U.S. The industry employs 4,371 workers and supports 31,600 retirees, contributing around $773 million in pay and benefits annually.
Pennsylvania's railroads originated 57.4 million tons of freight and handled 52.0 million tons inbound, including coal, intermodal shipments, petroleum products, chemicals, steel, and crushed stone.
By taking millions of trucks off the road, rail helps lower emissions, reduce traffic, and strengthen Pennsylvania's role as a key hub for logistics, manufacturing, and energy.

📌What type of railcar is this? What is transported in it? This is a “Gondola” railcar. Gondolas are open-top freight cars designed for transporting heavy, bulky, or loose materials that do not require protection from weather. They come in different lengths and configurations depending on the type of cargo being moved.

🔹Standard Gondolas: Scrap metal, steel products, construction debris, aggregates

🔹High-Side Gondolas: Coal, crushed stone, sand, and bulk materials

🔹Specialized Gondolas: Steel coils, pipes, and industrial materials

Their durable open design allows for easy loading and unloading by cranes, loaders, or rotary dump systems, making them essential for heavy industrial transport.

Happy Monday, freight folks. 🚂

One thing worth checking this week: when did you last analyze your rail rates beyond just the lane in front of you?

Looking at a single move in isolation can be misleading. The real insight comes from context:

How does this lane compare to similar lanes (same distance, same region)?
How does this same lane price for other products (different STCCs)?
Are you paying a premium relative to comparable movements in the market?

Rail pricing isn’t static. Carriers adjust based on commodity, density, and network dynamics. A rate that looks reasonable on its own may be out of line when viewed against adjacent lanes or comparable products.

In short: tariff rates cast a wide net across lanes and shippers; contract rates are customer-specific and can offer better pricing in exchange for shipper commitments.
