HOW TRASH RUNS HELP OSINT INVESTIGATIONS 🗑️

Garbology - the study of what people throw away isn’t just for archaeologists and academics. It’s a legitimate and surprisingly powerful tool in OSINT investigations.

Here’s why it matters:

Trash tells the truth. People discard documents, receipts, packaging, and correspondence without a second thought. In many jurisdictions, once something hits the curb, it loses legal privacy protection making it fair game for investigators operating within the law.

What garbology can surface in an investigation:

→ Financial records and bank statements left unshredded
→ Prescription labels that confirm identities or locations
→ Utility bills that verify addresses and residency patterns
→ Handwritten notes, discarded drafts, or printed emails
→ Packaging that reveals purchasing habits, subscriptions, or business relationships
→ Organizational affiliations through mailers, magazines, or branded materials

When combined with digital OSINT methods public records searches, social media analysis, metadata extraction , physical discards can corroborate leads, fill gaps, and add a layer of ground-truth verification that purely digital methods can’t always provide.

The best investigations don’t just live online. They follow the full information trail and sometimes that trail runs straight to the curb.
