Happy Halloween weekend, Gwinnett! 🎃

In the spirit of the season, here's our list of the scariest things we find in offices. No names, and no judgment. We've seen all of these more than once.

👻 The password from 2012. Still working, still on a sticky note, still shared by half the office.

💾 The backup drive in a drawer. Bought, set up once, unplugged a while back. Nobody noticed.

🔑 The ghost account. Somebody left two years ago and their login still works perfectly.

💻 The laptop that's been clicking "remind me later" on updates since spring.

📦 The mystery box in the closet. Blinking lights, no label, and nobody's sure what happens if you unplug it. (Please don't.)

The good news is none of these are expensive to fix. Most of them take an afternoon.

It's not even Halloween yet and the fake delivery texts are already showing up. 📦

You know the one. "Your package couldn't be delivered. Update your address here." Sometimes there's a tiny fee to "reschedule." Sometimes it just wants you to log in.

They show up more every year around this time, because everybody's ordering stuff and nobody remembers exactly what's coming.

Here's the easy rule for the whole season: don't tap the link in the text. If you think a package might really be stuck, open the carrier's app or go to their website yourself and type in the tracking number from your order.

Real carriers aren't going to text you asking for a card number to redeliver a box.

Pass this along to the family group chat. Somebody in there is going to need it before December 🙂

All week we've been talking about business backups. Let's end Backups Week somewhere closer to home.

Your family photos.

For a lot of us, years of birthdays, first days of school, vacations and "look at this dog" moments live in exactly one place: the phone in your pocket. The one that's been dropped, left on a restaurant table and nearly washed with the laundry.

Here's the easy weekend check. Open your phone's photo settings and see if cloud backup is actually turned on. On an iPhone that's iCloud Photos. On Android it's usually Google Photos. Then check that it isn't stuck because the storage is full. That's the one that gets people.

If you want to go the extra mile, copy the really important ones somewhere else too. A computer at home or an external drive works great.

Five minutes this weekend, and the photos you'd never want to lose are living somewhere besides one phone.

It's Backups Week in our Cybersecurity Awareness Month series, and here's the one easy thing to do.

Find out when your last backup actually ran.

Not when it was set up. Not "we have one of those." The date of the last one that finished.

It's usually a quick look. The backup software or the little external drive app will show a date. If someone handles your IT, it's a one-line email to them.

Here's why it matters. Backups love to stop quietly. A password changes, a drive fills up, a computer gets replaced, and the backup just... doesn't happen anymore. No alarm, no pop-up. It keeps looking fine right up until the day you need it.

If the date you find is from last night, great, you're done. If it's from sometime in the spring, you just found the most useful thing you'll find all week, and you found it on a calm Tuesday instead of a bad one.

Five minutes. Go check. 💾

Friday tip, and it's an easy one. Update your phone tonight.

Our phones do basically everything now. Work email, banking, texts from clients, the app that runs the security cameras. And most of us have an update waiting that we keep tapping "later" on.

Here's the lazy-person version, which is honestly the best version:

Tonight, plug your phone in before bed. Go to Settings, find Software Update, and tap Install. It'll do its thing while you sleep.

While you're in there, turn on automatic updates. Then you never have to think about it again.

That's it. Five minutes, most of it asleep.

If your family or your team all use their phones for work stuff, pass this along. It's the easiest security habit there is.

Somewhere in Gwinnett there's a laptop that has politely asked to restart every single day since August.

Every day it asks. Every day somebody clicks "remind me later." It's starting to feel personal. 😅

Here's the thing most people don't realize. A lot of updates download in the background just fine, but they don't actually finish until the computer restarts. So that laptop might have a month of security fixes sitting there, packed and ready, waiting for a two-minute restart that never comes.

And closing the lid doesn't count. Shutting down at night usually doesn't count either, thanks to a Windows feature that saves where you left off to start faster in the morning. A real Restart is what gets the job done.

So here's the easy version: Friday afternoon, before you head out, save your work and click Restart. Not shut down, not close the lid. Restart.

Your laptop will be thrilled. It's been asking so nicely.

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this week is all about updates. This one's the easiest win of the whole month.

Quick one to close out logins week. 📶

Think about everyone who's asked for your office Wi-Fi password this year. The plumber. The copier tech. A job candidate. Somebody's teenager waiting in the lobby after school.

Super normal request, and saying yes feels like good manners.

Here's the catch: the main office network is where your computers, printers and files live. Every phone that joins it is sitting right next to all of that. Nobody means any harm, but you have no idea what's on their device, and honestly neither do they.

The easy fix is a guest network. Most business routers have one built in. Turn it on, give it its own name and password, and set it so it only reaches the internet and nothing else.

Then hand that password out to anyone who asks. Put it on a little sign in the lobby if you want. That's what it's for.

Five minutes of setup and your visitors are happy, and your office network stays just for your office.

Confession time. We've been doing IT for a while now, and we've learned one universal truth about offices.

If you lift up the keyboard, there's a good chance you'll find a sticky note. 📝

Sometimes it's on the monitor. Sometimes it's in the top drawer. Once in a while it's taped to the bottom of the mouse pad, which honestly shows some creativity.

And on it? The password. Usually a few of them. Sometimes with helpful labels like "EMAIL (NEW)" and "EMAIL (NEW NEW)."

We get it. There are way too many passwords to remember, and nobody wants to get locked out during a busy day.

But anyone who walks by that desk, whether it's a cleaning crew, a vendor or a visitor, can read that note in two seconds.

The easy fix is a password manager. It's an app that remembers all your passwords for you, behind one strong one that you actually memorize. No more sticky notes, no more "NEW NEW."

It's Week 1 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we're talking logins all week. Go check under your keyboard. We'll wait :)

Happy October, Gwinnett! 🍂

It's officially Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which in our world is kind of a big deal. Think Super Bowl, but with more password advice.

Here's our promise for the month: no scare tactics. No "hackers are coming for you" posts. No acronym soup.

Just four weeks of the plain, practical stuff that makes a small business a lot harder to break into:

Week 1: Logins
Week 2: Updates
Week 3: Backups
Week 4: People

And one easy thing for this weekend, while you're on your phone anyway: go into the settings on your email account and turn on two-step sign-in (you might see it called multi-factor or 2FA). It's the biggest bang-for-your-buck security step there is, and it takes about five minutes.

That's it. That's the homework. Enjoy the weekend, and the first real fall weather if it ever decides to show up :)

And just like that, September's nearly done.

Quick look back at the month around here:

We kicked things off by finally explaining what we actually do, in regular words. Turns out "we keep your business tech working so you don't have to think about it" was the sentence we needed all along.

We got a proper Labor Day off. Highly recommend.

Preparedness month happened, and if even a few of you wrote down your five emergency phone numbers or set up that second backup, that post did its job.

We hit peak gratitude over our Google reviews. Still five stars across the board, still not over it.

And fall showed up, at least on the calendar. The weather's negotiating.

Now October's around the corner, and it's Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which for us is basically the Super Bowl. We'll keep it practical and jargon-free, promise.
