Happy September, Gwinnett.

Every so often someone asks us what NGT Technology actually does. Fair question. "IT services" can mean about a hundred different things.

Here's our version, no jargon.

Our job is keeping local businesses safe and operational. The safe part: we watch for threats, keep security updates rolling out on schedule, and make sure your data is backed up so one bad click or one dead hard drive doesn't take your business down with it. The operational part: computers, Wi-Fi, email, phones, the software your team uses all day. We keep it working, and when something acts weird, you call us and a real person picks it up from there.

Most of our clients are small businesses right here in Gwinnett. Law offices, medical practices, shops, trucking companies. Places where nobody has time to be the office IT person on top of their real job, and where one ransomware email or one crashed server hurts way more than it would at a big company.

That's the whole idea. You run your business. We keep it protected and running.

We've been doing it since 2019, and most of the businesses who started with us back then are still with us today. We're pretty proud of that.

Well, that was August.

Kids went back to school, the pickup line took over the afternoons, and somehow we're already talking about fall.

Looking back at the month, we covered a few things here:

Back-to-school season, and how the same reset that works for family routines works for business tech too. New year, new habits, fresh look at what needs updating.

A lot of local business love. Gwinnett is full of people running good businesses without much fanfare, and we like pointing at them when we can.

And of course, the closet. The dusty box quietly running your whole office that nobody has looked at in years. That one got a reaction. Turns out most of you know exactly which closet we mean.

Thanks for reading along, commenting, and putting up with our enthusiasm for network gear. September's coming and it's honestly our favorite stretch of the year around here.

Last question of the month: what's one thing you're glad you got done this summer? Work or otherwise, we'll take both.

Every office has one.

It lives in a closet, usually on a shelf next to the extra paper towels and a box of holiday decorations. It's covered in dust. It has a bunch of blinking lights and a tangle of cables going who knows where.

And it's running your entire business.

Phones, wifi, the card reader, the computers, the cameras. All of it goes through that little box nobody thinks about. Most owners have never opened that door on purpose. Some aren't totally sure which closet it's in.

We're not judging. Honestly it's kind of impressive how long those things run without anyone saying thank you.

But here's the thing. That box has a lifespan, it stops getting security updates at some point, and in a lot of offices there's only one of them. When it finally quits, it takes everything with it.

Worth knowing how old yours is before it picks a random Tuesday to retire.

Happy Friday, Gwinnett.

Quick appreciation post for the local businesses that quietly make our week work.

The lunch spot that knows the order before we say it. The mechanic who's honest about what actually needs fixing. The print shop that turned something around same day when we asked nicely. The coffee place where half our planning happens.

None of them are huge. All of them are somebody's whole life savings and a lot of early mornings.

That's the thing about running a small business around here. You end up depending on other small businesses, and it works because people show up for each other.

So here's to all of you. Have a good weekend, you earned it.

Let's do something useful with the comments today.

Tag a local business you love. A restaurant, a shop, a mechanic, the person who cuts your hair, whoever. Bonus points if they're small and could use the boost.

We'll start it off, because we owe this community a lot. NGT has been in Gwinnett since 2019, and pretty much everything good that's happened to us started with a local owner taking a chance on us or telling a friend about us.

Small businesses around here look out for each other. That's not a slogan, we've watched it happen. Somebody's freezer goes out and three people show up with coolers.

First full week of school in Gwinnett is in the books. Everybody made it.

Shout-out to the parents who figured out the new drop-off line, the teachers who learned 25 names in five days, and the small business owners who did all of that and still ran their business.

Fridays in August hit a little different. That first week back is a lot.

We had a good one over here. Nothing dramatic, which in our line of work is the best possible outcome. Quiet weeks mean everybody's technology behaved, and we'll take it.

Whatever your weekend looks like, hope you get a real break in there somewhere.

School's back in Gwinnett, which means the morning commute just added fifteen minutes and every school zone is doing 25 whether you like it or not.

We've made peace with it. Mostly.

Honestly, there's something nice about it. The whole county gets back on a schedule after summer. Everybody's a little more organized in August.

Since routines are the theme this week, here's one for the office that takes almost no effort: restart the computers once a week. Not shut down. Restart. Machines that run for a month straight get slow and weird, and half the "my computer is acting up" calls we get clear right up with a proper restart.

Pick a day. Friday afternoon works great. Everyone hits restart before they walk out.

That's it. That's the tip.

Quick thank-you post, because we don't say it enough.

To every client who's trusted us with their technology: thank you. Seven years in, and most of the businesses that started with us are still here. That means the world to a small local company like ours.

One of our clients recently left this, and it pretty much sums up what we're going for:

Running a business is hard enough without your IT costs bouncing all over the place.

That's the whole idea behind a flat monthly fee. You know what you're paying, every month, no matter what. No mystery invoice after every problem. No "uh oh, what's this going to cost" when something breaks.

And here's the part people like most: when your IT company gets paid the same whether things break or not, they're motivated to keep things running. Fewer fires for everybody.

Predictable in. Predictable out. One less thing to stress about.

Surprise IT bills shouldn't be a thing. But for a lot of businesses, they are.

You know the cycle. Something breaks, you call someone, and you have no idea what the bill's going to be until it shows up. Budget for that? Good luck. And since you're paying by the hour, the IT company actually does better when things go wrong. That's a weird way to do business.

We do it the other way. A flat monthly fee, so you know exactly what you're paying. And because we're not billing by the breakdown, we're motivated to keep your stuff running instead of waiting for it to fail.

Predictable costs. Fewer fires. Everybody pulling in the same direction.

That's how it should work.
