Why business school? Why now?

"I have been considering business school since I was in college. Because I attended a liberal arts institution, I knew that in order to get to a place that I felt competent and confident enough to have a major impact on a business I would need to pursue an MBA. I actually considered some deferred enrollment MBA programs during my senior year, but ultimately knew that I wanted to gain more real-life experience before making any decisions. After working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment in the software space, I felt I had a stronger foundation to pursue my degree in business."
Why Darden? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?

"I’m a firm believer that things typically work out as they should. When I first began my business school search my first broad criteria was geographic location. I had spent so much time in the Northeast so I eliminated that as an option entirely. I was living in DC at the time and loved it, so I considered the DC area, the south, as well as the West Coast. I didn’t expect to get into Darden or to love Charlottesville, but as soon as I stepped on grounds for my interview and interacted with the community I knew I could see myself here."

"Why business school? Why now?"
"After graduating college, I wanted to use my geology degree to approach environmental policy through a science lens and, as my career progressed, my interest evolved to focus more on clean energy and the social impact of climate change. I was lucky enough to work at an organization that sat between the private and public sector in addressing these issues at a global scale; it was powerful to see the impact and role that private companies, governments, and non-profits had to play, but there was still a mismatch between where resources and action were. I left non-profits to join a tech consulting firm that would put me closer to decision makers so that I could see change implementation at the enterprise level."
"I decided to pursue an MBA after two years in consulting so that I can better marry these two worlds and explore how the skills and strengths of each sector can be leveraged by both to address major social issues holistically, while also accelerating impact."
"Social impact requires such cross-sector involvement, and I felt that business school would round out my experiences and give me a different lens to better approach these issues. I was at a point in my career where I had a breadth of experience to draw on that would allow me to both contribute and grow in a classroom setting, and it felt like a natural time to go back to school."
"I also firmly believe we need more women in C-suites and conversations that are happening in business school, and I felt that an MBA would help me advance my career by giving me more credibility."

Featuring James Williams, Rice MBA Class of 2022.
👉 Why Rice Business? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?

I’ve known I wanted to attend Rice for my MBA since arriving in Houston five years ago (even while ignoring my interest). I was first drawn by its well-known finance and real estate curriculums and alumni network. Yet, the thing that I most appreciated about Rice is the opportunity to receive a renowned and life-changing education in the middle of the city that my family has chosen to make its forever home. Having fallen in love with Houston many years ago, I see Rice as a major part of helping me build a thriving life here.
👉 Advice to current prospective applicants:

One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I appreciated having to write the essays. It was a chance to provide a deeper view into my background and values. Few parts of the process provide this type of uninterrupted space.
👉 One thing you would change or do differently?

I would have started earlier and interacted with the school — students, faculty, staff, and alumni — more. Every engagement is an opportunity to learn even more about the program, the culture, and the things that will help you be successful. The earlier you can know this, the stronger your candidacy and, hopefully, your time as a student will be.

A security engineer is responsible for creating systems, methods, and policies to ensure an information system meets certain standards and has no security flaws. Security engineers often operate as “white-hat” ethical hackers and attempt to break into existing systems to determine if any security problems exist.
👉 Pay

The median annual wage for information security analysts was $103,590 in May 2020.
👉 Job Outlook

Employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 31 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for information security analysts is expected to be very high, as these analysts will be needed to create innovative solutions to prevent hackers from stealing critical information or causing problems for computer networks.

We have all seen so many inventions that were created out of necessity by people who have dedicatedly worked to find the solution to the problem. Electricity, an electric lamp, wireless communications, an aeroplane, or even the first-ever wheel were all invented by someone who was seeking for a solution, testing a thousand times or even studying things in nature as they looked for a solution everywhere. Elon Musk is one such person who is changing the world as we see it.
Elon Musk is never happy with his current position. His firm has accomplished a great deal, but Musk understands that there is always space for development in every field. There’s always a better, faster, or cheaper way to do things.

Featuring Bri Taylor, MBA’22 of the IU Kelley School of Business, who shares 5 tips to prepare for .
"Making the transition from employee to MBA student is a journey in and of itself. Now add the pressure of having to secure an internship by the end of your first year, while navigating core and maintaining some sort of social life, and one can become extremely overwhelmed."
"When looking back at my recruiting journey, the tips I received from my second years, Kelley alumni, and the Graduate Career Services team were extremely helpful as I prepared for recruiting season and ultimately secured my product marketing internship offer from Microsoft. As future Kelleys are preparing themselves for their first year and the upcoming recruiting season, I thought I would share a few tips that were passed down to me."
👉 1. Spend time reflecting on the types of problems you enjoy solving, what areas you’d like to grow in, and what your strengths are.
👉 2. Schedule exploratory calls with current students, Kelley alumni, or people outside of the Kelley network in your desired role and industry to confirm your interest.
👉 3. Identify the key roles you’d like to recruit for and begin applying early. It helps if the industry or company you want to work for offers summer boot camps. For example: Procter & Gamble Brand Camp, McKinsey Early Access, BCG Unlock, Bain Base Scholars, Kearny Diversity Boot Camp.
👉 4. As you wait to receive an invitation to interview, begin crafting your CAR statements. Very similar to the STAR method, CAR stands for Context, Action, and Result.
👉 5. Reach out to current students and Kelley alumni in the role and company you have applied for to schedule a few mock interviews. From these interviews, you will receive feedback on how to improve your performance and a glimpse of the types of questions that will be asked during your real interview.

💭 "Here are the things I wish I’d known before and during college."
👉"Be intentional and seriously consider your plans."

"If the East Coast or Midwest is the post-graduate or summer destination for you, it’s always better to know sooner than later to give yourself enough time to dedicate yourself to recruiting and networking efforts. Ask yourself this question: Am I okay with leaving my friends and network to build another one somewhere else? Everyone is different, so there is no right answer other than the fact that you have to know your answer and plan accordingly."
👉"Take a chance on classes that you are interested in, but know nothing about."

"You truly never know where those new experiences will take you — and you’ll want to do it early in your college career. The best-case scenario is that you take a class and it introduces you to a new passion, new major, new minor, or even career path. The worst-case scenario?"
👉"Find your thing."

"Whether that means working out at the gym, taking a day trip to San Francisco to get out of Berkeley, or finding a hobby to do with your friends, you’ll want to make some time for it in your week. College can quickly consume you and your schedules, if you don’t pay attention your calendar will fill up with meetings and class, and other responsibilities. Before you know it, you won’t even have time for all the fun parts of college that will be the lasting memories we hold for the rest of our lives."

A technical writer is a professional information communicator whose task is to transfer information between two or more parties, through any medium that best facilitates the transfer and comprehension of the information. Technical writers research and create information through a variety of delivery media (electronic, printed, audio-visual and even touch).
Example types of information include online help, manuals, white papers, design specifications, project plans and software test plans. With the rise of e-learning, technical writers are increasingly becoming involved with creating online training material.
👉 Pay?

The median annual wage for technical writers was $74,650 in May 2020.
👉 Job Outlook?

Employment of technical writers is projected to grow 7 percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by the continuing expansion of scientific and technical products. An increase in Web-based product support should also increase demand for technical writers. Job opportunities, especially for applicants with technical skills, are expected to be good.
