Mark A. Carlson, MD has spent years caring for elders living with Parkinson’s, dementia, and other neurological conditions - and through that work, he’s witnessed how music can reach patients and families in ways medicine alone often cannot.

On the Listening With Hope podcast, Dr. Carlson joins host Hope Young alongside Tom Smith for a heartfelt conversation about music’s role in healing, connection, and quality of life. Over the past decade, his appreciation for music as therapy has deepened - not only in clinical care, but at home as well, inspired by his 16-year-old twin daughters, Lacey and Addison, who have embraced music in ways that surprised him.

From supporting elders through illness to nurturing connection across generations, this conversation reminds us that music meets us exactly where we are - and carries us forward.

“Music remembers what the brain forgets.”

Ray Benson's mom had gone through several strokes. She was brilliant, but she’d always been tone-deaf - she couldn’t carry a tune to save her life. Then one day, Ray plays “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on guitar… and suddenly she starts singing along. In tune. Every word. Every note.

It was like the music unlocked a part of her that the strokes couldn’t touch.

Moments like this remind us why music is so powerful -
why it connects, heals, and brings people back to themselves in ways nothing else can.

What if you were told you’d never walk - and decided to run instead?

This October, three extraordinary teens are proving what’s possible.

Lila, Joseph, and Martin - all living with cerebral palsy - are training under Hope Young, inventor of SoundSteps™ Mobile, to compete in the Run Against Breast Cancer 5K/10K/21K in Cedar Park, TX.

These kids are part of TEAM I AM I CAN, a group born from Hope’s belief that music and movement can rewire the brain. Using SoundSteps™ Mobile, BMS’s groundbreaking neurotechnology, they’ve gone from struggling with balance and gait… to walking with control, strength, and confidence — and now, to running! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️💥

“When you move better, you can go farther, do more things, and have a better quality of life.” – Lila, TEAM Captain

Every step these kids take is rewriting what doctors once said was impossible - showing the world that with the right tools, community, and belief, the healing continues.

Join us in cheering on TEAM I AM I CAN as they take on the Run Against Breast Cancer on October 18, 2024 — running for hope, for healing, and for every child who dares to dream beyond limitation.

“I can’t teach you music, but I can help you learn how to pray in God’s language.” 🎶🙏

On the Listening with Hope Podcast, guitar legend Stanley Jordan reflects on what music truly is at its highest form. For him, it’s more than sound, more than performance - it’s a pathway to the divine.

He recalls the story of his friend and collaborator, Jay Kishwar, who was told by his guru, Annapurna Devi that music isn’t something you “learn” - it’s something you live, breathe, and channel as a form of prayer.

This conversation is a powerful reminder:

Music is not just notes, It’s the language of the soul. It’s how we connect to something greater than ourselves.

Can music ever hurt the brain? Hope Young & Dr. David Morledge explain why not all sounds heal—and why music must be used with intention.

Music that evokes negative emotions or painful memories — especially in patients with dementia — can sometimes do more harm than good.

Overly loud or chaotic music, like heavy techno, can overstimulate the brain, just like a crowded room overwhelms the senses.

And yes… maybe punk rock isn’t always the best first choice for therapy

This conversation highlights the importance of using music intentionally — not just for entertainment, but as a science-backed tool for healing, focus, and emotional wellbeing.

Music has power. The key is learning how to harness it.

From Wheelchairs to Finish Lines 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Lila has never let Cerebral Palsy define her. She’s always pushed past the limits, proving that when you move better, you live better.

Now, she’s leading the charge for kids just like her. With SoundSteps Mobile, Lila has become the team captain for a new generation — kids who once struggled to walk are now preparing to run their very first race.

And on October 18, 2025, these kids will cross the starting line together at the Run Against Breast Cancer in Austin/Round Rock — no adaptive equipment, no limits. Just grit, heart, and the power of SoundSteps™ Mobile - driven movement.

Lila isn’t just racing — she’s building a movement.
Children with CP are walking taller, moving stronger, and proving what’s possible.💪

Follow their journey. Cheer them on. And believe with them.
When you move better, you go farther. ❤️

“After the gunshot, I was a different person …" - Andy Thomas

Traumatic brain injury doesn’t just change how you move — it changes who you are.

In this moment, Andy reflects on the deep, ongoing process of healing after surviving a gunshot wound to the head. His story is one of courage, grit, and the long road of neurorecovery — not just for the body, but for the soul.

This is why we do what we do. Because recovery is a journey, not a finish line. And nobody should walk it alone.

Lila’s not just running — she’s leading.

In early 2025, she brought together a team of teens with cerebral palsy to train and compete in a 10K this fall. 💪

They started on our Biodex GT3 Treadmill with MAT, and in June, became the first in the world to use our new SoundSteps™ Mobile App!

Now they’re walking with balance, control, and endurance — across any terrain, even in remote places.

Follow their journey as SoundSteps™ Mobile takes them everywhere they dream to go. 🌍✨

Music can heal our Brains through Neuroplasticity!

Neurologist Dr. Morledge explains the power of neuroplasticity — the brain’s natural ability to heal, rewire, and build new pathways after a stroke or TBI.

And here’s the kicker:
Musicians have a better chance at recovery. Why? Because playing music literally strengthens the brain.

In fact, studies show that just 30 minutes of piano, twice a week, significantly improves cognition after traumatic brain injury. 🎹

Whether you're 8 or 80, your brain can change. And music is a powerful tool to help make that change possible.

Meet Lila — the girl who defied every limit, and continues to inspire ours.

Eight years ago, Lila became the first child with cerebral palsy in the world to use our patented BMS audio technology. After just 8 weeks of Music Assisted Therapy (MAT), she went from falling 3x a week… to no falls at all. 💪

Six months later, she ran the Cap10K with her family by her side.

But like every growing teen, Lila hit new challenges — a growth spurt that made walking harder again. She reached out to us with a new dream: to make SoundSteps™ more accessible, so any kid like her could get help — even if they couldn’t be near a therapist.

In her own words, Lila told us:

"My hope is for people who have trouble like me — with balancing or walking — to get help through SoundSteps™… even if they can’t be near Miss Hope or anyone connected to her.”

So we listened. And we delivered.

SoundSteps™ Mobile is here.
Lila’s vision helped shape the future of accessible, brain-based rehabilitation — right from your phone.

Lila isn’t just our first success story. She’s our compass.
