What are the 4 ‘Must Have’ Forklift Fleet Management Tools?

#1: Digital Transformation
Digitizing the electronic forklift inspection checklist is critical for remaining OSHA compliant, maintaining the health of the forklift fleet and planning for future maintenance and repair.

#2: Forklift Access Control
Any unauthorized individuals who attempt to access a forklift won’t be going anywhere.

#3: Forklift Impact Detection
This is a must-have tool that measures the G-Force of any forklift impact.

#4: Centralize Your New Digital Information into a Single Dashboard
Take your newly captured information (and much more not listed here in the article) and analyze your findings.

WHY Does OSHA and Your Current or Future Employer Want You to be Certified to Drive a Forklift?

When an individual decides to take the time to go through forklift training and become certified, you are providing proof to your employer and to OSHA that you have a foundational understanding for operating a forklift safely. It may seem insignificant, but it’s actually very important, not just for the driver’s safety, but for the safety of everyone and everything in the facility.

According to OSHA, 5,333 workers died on the job in 2019, a 2% increase from 2018 and the largest increase since 2007. That’s 3.5 per 100,000 full-time workers. On average, there are about 15 deaths every day.

Then there’s the product and facility damage caused by the forklift. Taken from our own customers, prior to the implementation of the https://bit.ly/3AAFkVm Safety Systems, the companies reported $100K+ a year on product damage and facility damage.

As companies invest in forklift safety products, clearly accidents continue to increase. Here’s a great graphic from the National Safety Council (NSC) that shows non-fatal injuries from 2011 to 2019. It says that injuries are continuing to rise and distributed amongst the 25 to 54 year old worker. However, fatal injuries are prevalent with the 55 to 64 year-old worker.

As worker safety is a critical component of forklift safety, why haven’t you investigated https://bit.ly/3ufrA09 forklift safety solutions? Here’s a couple reasons why we believe this will work for you:

1. No wearable devices. You have to trust that all workers and visitors will put on a device. Yeah right. Take that out of the equation with the S3 Pedestrian Detection. It detects workers in full sight or partially blocked by an object. It can also detect a pedestrian that are bending, stooping, reaching…whatever.

2. Proximity Monitoring. Since when can a forklift driver see everything going on around him/her while performing the job? Don’t you think the forklift operator needs a bit of assistance? The https://bit.ly/3ufrA09 proximity monitoring acts as the operator’s eyes by scanning in all 4 directions every 60ms. If something comes within the defined distance, it’ll give the forklift operator visual and audio warnings.

If you like these two, we have a whole bunch more. Send me an email or schedule up a call and I’ll personally show you how you can control these numbers in your facility.

4 Ways to Prevent Forklift Accidents

#1: Forklift Access Control
Limit usage to only those people authorized and trained to use equipment.

#2: Proximity Forklift Sensors: Turning Corners
Detect potential near misses and alert drivers before an accident

#3: Forklift Pedestrian Detection: Partial or Full
Make sure people are safe and stay outside the safety bubble of the vehicle

#4: Electronic Forklift Inspection: Mechanical Breakdown
Track inspections digitally to capture maintenance issues as they happen.

Some of the presentations at the ASSP got me thinking about forklifts and safety. Can an increase in accidents hinder the growth of the forklift manufacturing industry? I decided to do some research to find out if that’s true.

I discovered this paragraph from Allied Market Research. It states:
“The rate of accidents related to the forklifts trucks has increased over the past few years. More than half of the injured people are drivers or pedestrians who stepped down from the vehicle. In addition, of all the vehicles that are used in the workplace, forklift is one of the most dangerous and is often used around pedestrians. Furthermore, approximately out of 850,000 forklifts present in the U.S., 11% of them are involved in an accident. Thus, increase in safety issues and accidents related to forklift trucks is anticipated to hinder the growth of the forklift truck market.”

This is a concern as it doesn’t need to hinder the forklift market’s growth. All it needs is the right forklift safety solution.

Great presentation day at the Safety 2021 ASSP Conference in beautiful Austin, TX. Today, the presentation on, “The Current State of Safety and Beyond —Business Continuity Now” consisted of a panel of safety executives discussing business continuity, or the emergency preparedness a company must take when a disaster strikes.

Panelists included Ford Motor, Amazon and Republic Services and was moderated by the CEO of the American Society of Safety Professionals. It was a lively discussion on topics such as showing up to work in-person, labor shortages and our favorite topic, forklift accidents and injuries.

If you’d like to know more about the panel discussion, let me know. I’d be happy to share more details with you. DM me or comment below.

We rely on our eyesight for everything in order to come up with the correct response. We think nothing of it when we trip and wonder ‘what did I trip on?’ Or you quickly move because you think you saw something coming your way. Sometimes it’s true, other times it’s not.

Forklift drivers don’t have the luxury of making a mistake. As a forklift driver goes about his workday, he needs to have multiple sets of eyes going on in all directions at the same time.

✅ Watch what work is being performed
✅ Watch when loads are lifted 13’ into the air
✅ Watch for pedestrians and obstacles
✅ Watch so the forklift doesn’t turn over when you’re going on/off a trailer
✅ Watch so turns are far enough away from the racks, walls, equipment

How can you get anything done?

As we prepare for the Safety 2021 conference next week, we thought it would be great to share what it’s like to have a taste of success.

A manufacturing company experienced 10-15 incidents since the beginning of the year with vehicle, facility and product damage. They decided to do something about their forklift safety issues and determined our 30-day S2 trial was the way to go.

One of the critical issues was with worker’s ignoring the forklift inspection process. The second, was all of the paper-based forklift inspections. How can you gather insights to something that’s in booklets?

Let’s not forget forklift impacts. The manufacturing company knew it happens all the time. But how do you know if the impact was strong enough to cause concern?

During a 30-day trial we uncovered:
✅ 5 equipment failures
✅ 22 impacts over the customer’s defined threshold of 2.5G
✅ Savings of 70% on the cost of damages to the product and the facility,
✅ Savings of 1 hour per day worth of management’s time
✅ Increase the safety score from 45% to 75%.

We know you're always looking for new safety solutions that can increase business productivity and drive accidents to zero at the same time.

So come see how we've helped warehouses and factories track near misses, fleet health and pre-trip inspections digitally with a single dashboard.

Here's an example:
18% of near misses in a typical narrow aisle warehouse involve pedestrians
Up to 14% of inspections recorded do not pass

To experience the forklift safety system that
✅ Detect pedestrians automatically
✅ Report impacts with g-forces
✅ Captures inspections digitally and instantly reports failures
