We remember the life and legacy of Dr. Lily Wong Fillmore, a beloved member of our Multilingual Education Hall of Fame and a teacher to so many of us in this field.

Lily helped us understand what is at stake when children lose the language of their home. Beyond words, they can lose the everyday conversations, family stories, and connections that help them know who they are. Her work reminded us that learning English should expand a child’s world while keeping those connections strong.

She brought that same care to her scholarship, helping generations of educators better understand how children learn language and how schools can support them. Behind the research were always children, families, and a deep concern for their lives.

In her Hall of Fame reflection, Lily spoke about how much she still wanted to learn. After a lifetime of teaching and discovery, she remained curious about the world and the possibilities learning could open for children. That spirit is something we will hold close.

It was a privilege to honor her in the Multilingual Education Hall of Fame. We are grateful for the wisdom she shared and for the responsibility she leaves with all of us: to help children thrive academically while honoring their languages, their families, and their sense of belonging.

Our hearts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and the many educators whose lives she touched.

Thank you, Lily. Your work will live on in the classrooms you helped change and in the generations of children who will benefit from it.

We are heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend and Hall of Fame member, Dolores Huerta. Today, we’re holding close the memories of her courage, her warmth, and the hope she brought to everyone around her.
Before she was a legend, Dolores was a classroom teacher. Her students were often farmworkers’ children who came to school hungry, and she couldn’t look away. Caring for them is what first moved her to organize.

For the rest of her life, she fought so that families whose voices and languages had been pushed aside could finally be heard. Sometimes that work looked as simple and as powerful as making sure California’s driver’s license exam was offered in Spanish.

For those of us in multilingual education, her legacy is a lasting reminder: when we open the door to language, we open the door to belonging. Every student deserves to know that their language is a strength, their voice matters, and their story belongs.

It was one of our greatest honors to welcome Dolores into the Multilingual Education Hall of Fame. We are so grateful for the time we shared with her and for everything she gave to students, families, and educators.

Our hearts are with her family and everyone who loved her.
Thank you, Dolores. We will carry your courage forward.

That’s what one teacher said to Jamie Cantu Vargas, the principal of Dovalina Elementary in Laredo ISD. It stuck with her, and her story stuck with us.

Here's the perfect Monday morning pep talk. If anyone’s ever told you it can’t be done, you need to see this.

In Laredo ISD, on the banks of the Rio Grande, Dovalina Elementary Principal Jamie Cantu Vargas sat down with us to talk about what it takes to prove students can do great things.

“It did not happen overnight. It was a changing of mindset — she will be able to, he will be able to grow — because we’re not asking for perfection, but we’re asking for improvement. … They know to not tell Ms. Vargas, ‘I can’t.’”

Over the coming year, we’ll share more moments from these inspiring conversations: a former student tending to the superintendent in the back of an ambulance, a heart-warming run-in with a bus driver in the grocery aisle, a word of the week the whole campus learns so they grow together.
