Nearly a third of truck miles are driven empty, no paying freight on board. In trucking, that 30% deadhead number gets treated as just the cost of doing business.

Magnus CEO Matt Cartwright doesn't buy it.

Diesel finally cooled off in June. Just a little, it's the first real pullback since March.
Before you relax... the national average fell to $5.02, closing the month $0.855 below where May ended. That feels like real relief at the pump.
But guess what else? Prices are still 39.59% above June 2025, and June still logged four weeks above $5.00, bringing the 2026 total to 14 weeks over $5. One "good" month does not undo three months of elevated rates.
A price drop and a surcharge catching up are two different things. If your surcharge was built on last month's higher prices, it may now be recovering more than fuel is actually costing.

Ever wonder how a fuel surcharge gets calculated?

The short version: it is supposed to cover the extra cost of diesel, since fuel prices move up and down every week. But most surcharges are still calculated using an old price, not what diesel actually costs when the truck leaves the yard or the load reaches the dock.
There's a gap there that's been a challenge lately. If the surcharge doesn't match the real price of fuel at the right moment, it is not doing its job. It is just a guess.
