A trusted leader in elevator part manufacturing, ELSCO (Elevator Safety Company), Inc., approached Ashton to help refresh their visual brand and messaging as they started to explore options for expanding their business. Our team worked to strategically position their brand and support it with a robust identity, as well as overhaul their messaging and brand guidelines.

We modernized their iconic logo by redrawing it on an isometric grid, and brought new energy to their identity system with a fresh color palette, strong typography, and a custom grid system. We also refined their brand voice to better convey their deep experience and commitment in the field. All of these elements will set ELSCO apart and help convey the company's confidence in the goods and services they deliver.

Public heroes: Food For Thought celebrates the food service workers that prepare and distribute over 88,000 meals each day to ensure Baltimore City Public School students don’t go hungry. To honor their hard work, the Baltimore Museum of Industry partnered with Food and Nutrition Services to create an audiovisual exhibition that places the typically back-of-house staff front and center. Ashton developed the exhibit’s identity and interactive experience to complement portraits taken by photojournalist J.M. Giordano and interviews hosted by WYPR radio producer Aaron Henkin.

Key details we chose for the exhibit include cafeteria furniture, such as melamine chairs, which also set the color palette, and traditional folding tables. The photography portrait style makes the subjects look and feel like superheroes, while the accompanying audio gives each their own voice.

Taken together, the visual system exudes an “Educational Bauhaus” style, thanks to its dedication to geometric forms, simplified color palette, and function-as-design sensibility.

Award winning design: We are thrilled to share that Ashton Design was recognized for a 2022 SEGD Global Design Merit Award! Part of our team traveled to Portland, OR last week to accept this distinction, where we were one of 38 projects (from more than 300 global submissions) to be awarded.

This award celebrates our wayfinding and signage design for Merriweather District, which is a mixed-use community in Columbia, Maryland. We were inspired by the phrase ‘grow boldly’, which was the guiding principle of the new district. The unique ‘perspective’ concept of our signage was inspired by the ‘window’ or void that is part of the logo. The resulting designs are bold, sculptural, and iconic.

The Miguel B. Fernandez Family Foundation Center for Innovation & Collaborative Learning: A new state-of-the-art, sustainable, 35,000-square-foot building at Loyola University Maryland was built to enhance how members of the Loyola community learn, teach, collaborate, innovate, research, and network.

We conceptualized and designed a comprehensive donor recognition system, exterior building signage, ADA/code signage, interpretive elements, and branded graphics. All components were inspired by a central theme found in the building’s name — innovation and collaborative learning.

Donor recognition was a key element of this project, with a significant presence both inside and outside of the building. The inspiration for many of our sign types, distraction graphics, and our contemporary 2-piece cross design came from folded paper, leaning into the idea that paper is one of humankind’s significant innovations. Painted quotes that wrap the stairwell walls carry on this ‘folded’ concept.

To honor the rich history of the university, we designed graphic totems that are placed throughout the space, featuring both images and text. The new Center is now located where a small chapel once stood, so we created an installation showcasing historic stained glass to honor its legacy.

For the littlest creatives: Tiny Easel’s watercolor kits encourage kids to explore their artistic side with step-by-step guidance and high-quality supplies. Ashton worked with Tiny Easel to bring this playful and endearing brand to life by designing and developing an e-commerce website, product packaging and collateral.

In keeping with the spirit of the brand, original artwork is infused throughout our approach. Product illustrations on the website let customers know what comes in each box, while the product packaging itself showcases original watercolor artwork by the company’s founder.

As the website launched, Ashton provided social media strategy, which supported the brand’s subsequent print and television coverage.

Happy Earth Day (today and everyday)! We know that Earth Day isn’t just about celebrating one day a year, and we always appreciate partnering with brands like who understand that, too.

Lorax provides consulting services to find green solutions for developers, business owners, architects and real estate professionals. We partnered with them to re-invigorate their brand with a new visual system, including logo, identity, email & newsletter templates, and marketing collateral.

Our dynamic logo design takes advantage of the company’s digital-first presence, and the multi-icon system allows for customization and room to play. Thoughtful details like custom newsletter icons (including a cheeky ‘What’s Sprouting’ news icon) tie the new brand together for a cohesive experience.

A contemporary Capitol Hill community with history: Beckert’s park is a mixed-use, Washington, D.C. development for which we designed signage, murals, and wayfinding in partnership with .

Entertainment, leisure, and community take the focus here, in a nod to the property’s history; George Beckert originally purchased the property in the 1850s and created a brewery and a public park known as Beckert’s Garden. Botanical artwork is featured prominently throughout the building’s interior, in a nod to the original public park. We worked this theme into the large-scale leaf patterns featured in our parking garage wall murals.

Our wayfinding signage features elegant framing and was inspired by the architectural moulding and casing details found throughout the building's interior. The bronze finish was fabricated to match those of the lighting fixtures and interior hardware.

The building offers many amenities, including a pet spa and bike room, so we created playful wall graphics to enhance these spaces.

Amenities abound at Origin, upscale apartment residences which rise 22 stories above the Ballston Quarter retail center in Arlington, VA. Our team worked with Brookfield Properties to design interior and exterior signage with an air of luxury.

The interior signage and wayfinding helps lead the way to the building’s lounges, rooftop pool, and more. Our contemporary design nests white acrylic panels into an oil-rubbed bronze metal chassis for an elegant, marquee-like effect throughout the property. We were inspired by and strived to complement the plain-sawn red oak cladding used throughout the building’s shared spaces.

A brushed satin bronze titanium coating for the exterior signage creates a cohesive and complete result.

What happens when a historic printing warehouse is transformed into a new mixed use space? With a little luck, you may get something like Washington D.C’s Press House, which beautifully combines historical preservation with renewed purpose and spirit.

We joined developer Foulger-Pratt and a stellar team to design all the interior and exterior signage and wayfinding for the 12-story tall, full city block building. We were inspired by historic printing techniques, including letterpress block printing, which were carried through in our use of typography and signage dimensionality.

Inside the building, the slightly distressed face of our letterforms appear as if they were ‘inked’ like letterpress printing blocks. For the exterior, we made a statement with a four-story tall blade sign and a 14-foot address sign at the entry.

Working in harmony: We recently strategized and redesigned the outdated wayfinding system in the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, home of the esteemed Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Our main inspiration was the architecture and legacy of the iconic building, originally built in 1982. Thoughtful details like signage panels that mimic the dimensions of individual bricks found in the building’s construction, and deep channel monochromatic letterforms in the performance space aim to pay respect to a much-loved musical institution.
