One of my favorite things to do is to redesign my own website. It's something I do at least once a year. For companies that don't have the luxury of having an in house designer, I'd recommend a redesign once every 2-3 years for some industries and 3-5 for others. If you go past 5, it's not that your website is bad, it just means that people typically spend less time on it and start to look to your competition as an option (from what I've seen).
