Cybersecurity Starts with Understanding Your Organization’s Environment
Understanding your environment is one of the most overlooked aspects of cybersecurity. Right now, there is a heavy focus on tools, platforms, and AI, and many organizations are rushing to implement new technologies based mostly on recommendations and automated guidance without fully understanding how their own systems actually work together.
The problem is, if you do not clearly understand how systems communicate, where trust boundaries exist, and how access flows across your network, then you are not really securing anything. You are making assumptions. Relying primarily on instructions from AI-driven tools without understanding your environment can quickly lead to misconfigurations, unexpected behavior, and even major downtime. That is why so many technology implementations fail. It is not the tools. It is the lack of understanding behind how they are applied.
Your primary objective when you walk into any environment should be to do your due diligence and gather as much knowledge as possible before implementing new technologies, approaches, or controls. At the end of the day, you cannot protect or manage what you do not understand.
