The Fugs were anarchic beat poets in the East Village who took folk instruments they could sort of play and didn’t give a damn. Their music was so anti-establishment, though, that it didn’t matter. Made sure to make it upstate (further upstate) to see Paul Pearce’s solo exhibit “I solemnly swear” at The Schweinfurth Art Center, Auburn, NY, a retrospective of his photography, animation, and installations from his most-often autobiographical post Vietnam exploration of militarism. And other stuff :) The exhibit only runs through Oct 11 so if you can reach Auburn from where you are, get there. And if that’s next Friday Paul is giving an artist talk. Great work.

Happiest of birthday anniversaries to earth-shaking, community-building, collective-swaying Bernice Johnson Reagon, born this day Oct 4, in 1942 (d. Jul 16, 2024). Active with SNCC (the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) and cofounder of SNCC’s Freedom Singers, later founding the innovative acapella music collective Sweet Honey In The Rock in 1973. Through decades of organizing, composing, and performing Reagan was a steady voice for social change and a model for both resistance and harmony. Thanks for right-vibrating the earth, we’re still listening. Sweet Honey in the Rock

First look at the painting "Minnie Bruce Pratt, 'The Sound Of One Fork,' No. 25 | Literary Landscape Cover Series | 2025," (Gouache on Board, 20" x 16"). When I first started working on a memorial painting after Minnie Bruce Pratt's passing, I started with (I believe) her first published chapbook "The Sound Of One Fork," (Night Heron Press, 1981). As much as I liked where earlier ink paintings were going, I moved on to using the cover of her memoir "S/He," -- a version of which makes up half the diptych on view starting tonight at the Bank Art Gallery's "Vaulted Treasures" in Newburgh, NY. Recently I went back to those ink paintings and out of them generated this gouache painting, iteration number 25 in the series.
