Exciting day when an album this good hits the internet -- the latest offering by James Brandon Lewis Red Lily, "Calling Antonin" drops today -- first single & pre-orders available ztaoforms.lnk.to/dilemmaofhearts

Don't sleep on this fantastic record. And for my bit, the cover portrait of Antonín Dvořák was a blast to create, pen & ink drawing with digital painting.

Some sets sit immediately etch themselves into your audio memory, and the four sets I caught by and from their six-night, packed-house residency at carved their way in note-by-note, composition-by-composition, hour-by-hour.

Playing a range of music from their six releases (including “Omni” their latest), The James Brandon Lewis Quartet brought down the house. Wish I could have experienced all that magic but two nights is a musical blessing. Couldn’t be happier or prouder — a sentiment I can only assume is shared by the many musicians and artists who rolled through as word got out that something special was brewing on that legendary stage.

Shout out to the great company of fellow audience members .astengo.fefer .fidelity Satya Pemmaraju Pierre Menard and as the man said from the stage night after night: support human musicians

As in, “AI will not bring the heat.

NowiIt can’t be a coincidence that as the final set ended, the heavens opened with a cooling torrential downpour bringing on three days of much needed rain, now can it?

Visit Me! Beacon Open Studios Sat-Sun, Jun 27-28, noon-6PM (participating studio map in bio). Rumor has it that all framed art (by me) in the studio 50% off. And who doesn’t love an art rumor!

Still captivated by the Wilfredo Lam retrospective at MoMA (through Apr 11), perhaps more as the US tightens its stranglehold on the 60+ year sanctions against our small island neighbor. Lam lived an amazing life which included fighting fascists during the Spanish Civil War and escaping Cuba and Batista’s coup (eventually invited back after the successful revolution for which the county continues to be punished). Def go see the show if you can, and make time for the fascinating wall text and short bio video. Obviously influenced by the cubists and Picasso in particular, Lam pulled the aesthetic into Surrealism, actively participating in the surrealist diaspora — check out the remarkable book “Black, Brown, & Beige: Surrealist Writings from Africa and the Diaspora” (Surrealist Revolution Series) by Rosemont ad Robin DG Kelley for an engaging run-down on that scene. https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5788

Haymarket Books has released an updated edition of "How We Get Free
Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective” and that’s something to celebrate. Preferably by buying and reading from Haymarket or the good people at AK Press or, you know, from your fav brick-and-mortar. That said, I’m prob not making a second edition of this 2024 painting anytime soon… https://www.akpress.org/how-we-get-free-revised.html
