Cybersecurity Awareness Month is almost over.

The threats aren't.

If there's one thing businesses should take away from October, it's that cybersecurity isn't one product you install and forget about.

It's layers.

- People who know what to look for.
- Accounts protected with MFA.
- Devices that stay patched.
- Access that's properly managed.
- Backups that actually work.
- Security tools that are monitored.
- And a plan for what happens when something gets through anyway.

You don't need perfect security. You need to keep making your business harder to compromise and easier to recover.

That's something worth working on all year.

Would Your Team Know What to Do?

Imagine an employee opens their laptop tomorrow morning and sees a ransomware message.

What happens next?

Do they shut the computer down?

Disconnect it?

Call IT?

Email everyone?

Try to fix it themselves?

Now probably isn't the best time to figure that out.

An incident response plan doesn't need to be a 100-page document nobody reads.

"It's just one computer."

Unfortunately, attackers don't care.

- One unpatched laptop can be an entry point.
- One compromised email account can be used to impersonate an executive.
- One reused password can unlock multiple systems.
- One employee clicking the wrong link can start a much larger problem.

Cybersecurity isn't about assuming everything will go wrong.

It's about making sure one mistake doesn't become a company-wide incident.

The 10-Minute Security Check

Here's a cybersecurity exercise you can do in about 10 minutes.

Ask yourself:

- Does every employee use MFA?
- Are former employee accounts disabled?
- Are company devices encrypted?
- Are critical systems being patched?
- Are backups monitored and tested?
- Do employees know how to report a suspicious email?
- Do you know who to call if something happens?

Didn't know the answer to one or two?

That's probably where the next conversation should start.

Cybersecurity doesn't always begin with buying something.

Sometimes it begins with asking better questions.

The Employee Who Left Six Months Ago

Quick question:

What happens to an employee's accounts when they leave your company?

- Email disabled? Good.
- But what about their VPN access?
- Microsoft 365 sessions?
- Cloud applications?
- Shared passwords?
- Remote access?
- Company devices?

Former employees aren't necessarily the threat. Forgotten access is.

A good offboarding process makes sure access disappears when the employee does.

That's cybersecurity too.

MFA Isn't Optional Anymore

A stolen password shouldn't be enough to get into your business.

That's exactly why multi-factor authentication matters.

Even if an attacker manages to steal an employee's password through phishing, a data breach, or password reuse, MFA adds another barrier between them and your systems.

But there's an important catch:

MFA needs to be enabled everywhere it matters.

Microsoft 365. Remote access. Cloud applications. Administrative accounts. Financial systems.

Having MFA on some accounts is a good start. Knowing where you don't have it is just as important.
