Last week I was in the Queen Anne neighborhood helping someone troubleshoot his internet, set up a cable modem and router, and offer general advice. Tomorrow I'm in Sammamish to help a new neighbor with her general tech issues.

In the meantime, how can I help you with your tech needs? Message me on Facebook and let's set something up!

This past Sunday I spent an hour at the Newport Way Library, having signed up for a Tech for Seniors event. Though I am not a senior, nor did I need tech help, I wanted to be there in case the event leaders needed help.

I arrived and there were about 6-7 seniors, with approximately the same number of young volunteers, from an organization called Teens Who Care.

The volunteers were all in the 16 to 19-year-old range, and I saw that as the event continued, the seniors soon outnumbered them. I spoke to the young woman in charge and offered assistance and she quickly accepted.

I worked with a woman who had a new laptop that she was told had BIOS and/or virus issues. She hadn't touched in approximately 6 months or so. When I looked at it, it was clear that it hadn't even completed the setup process yet.

I walked her through the setup process, and then asked some questions about what else was going on. To make a long story short, she just need some general guidance. I helped set up her email, explained the differences between free Windows Security protection vs. paid, and left her feeling a lot better about her brand new computer and its configuration.

As I am working with folks in the neighborhood, I'm realizing that it's not all break/fix issues. In fact, none of what I've done is that. Instead, it's all about patience, compassion and simply listening to what the other person needs.

If that's what YOU need, send me a message, text, call or email. Happy to start a dialog and just listen to what you need.

My mom called me last night. She said her bathtub faucet wouldn't stop running. In the off position, water kept trickling out. She shut the main in the garage and called it a night.

I went over this morning to take a look. Tightened some screws, ran down to turn the water on, still leaking. Ran down to turn the water off and went back to disassemble the faucet handle and cartridge. I put it back together, ran back down to garage to turn on the water, ran back up and, yup, still leaking.

I decided to replace some parts. I ended up going to Ace Hardware in Renton, then back to her house, more troubleshooting, then back to Ace and back for a giant wrench, then more troubleshooting, and still, the faucet still leaked.

At this point, I had spent 3 hours or so, two 10 mile round trips to Renton, about $100 in parts, and no progress. I finally contacted my brother, who has a GC that has worked on my mom's house before, and over the phone, he already knew the problem, had the parts in his truck, and upon his arrival, could likely fix the issue in less than an hour.

Gentle reader, does this type of scenario sound familiar? Let's sub out the plumbing issue with your tech issue, and sub out the GC with Yours Truly. I can help you with the tech issues you think you can iron out... but possibly not. Let's do it together!

Let me be a friendly helper, a sort of digital handyman, with your tech needs! We can sit side by side, like friends working together to get your issues resolved. I'm in Newport Hills and I'm here to help. Let's make it more about the interaction, and not the transaction.

I've been fortunate enough to work with a couple customers lately who just needed some gentle guidance. Because we are all surrounded by tech these days, it seems most are comfortable enough with it.

But, think of it this way. I am in my kitchen every day. I can follow a recipe. Does that mean I can cook? Sure, I suppose! Will it be good? Maybe. Great? Let's pump the brakes.

Now, try this. If I have someone who knows how to cook there at my side, giving me tips and pointers that a recipe can't, answering questions that I didn't even know I had, well, my cooking is then elevated.

My customers were already properly set up and their computers were up to the task. But they were lacking some confidence in what they were doing and how they were doing it. I stepped in to be their trusted advisor and sounding board. And we had fun while we did it!

Book an appointment with me at your convenience! Let me be your digital handyman.

Three pieces of advice I always follow when working with tech stuff. From my days working either at the family business (C&A) to the Answer Desk at the Microsoft Store, I would tell customers the following:

1. Use common sense. Believe it or not, your device is not out to get you (Skynet notwithstanding). You are in charge. Take a step back and look at the big picture.

2. Don't be afraid of the tech. Back in the day, people were terrified of losing data or breaking something. These days, most everything is backed up to the cloud (computer in the sky), or otherwise retrievable in one way or another.

3. Read what the device tells you. Error messages, prompts, installation screens, they all have something to say. If you are stuck, often simply reading what is being displayed will help you out.

If you're just fed up with it all, give me a call. Happy to help!

Who here is using a pad and paper for your password storage system? What about Post-Its? I know you know this, but there IS a better way.

On my computers and phones, I currently use both LassPass and Bitwarden to manage my passwords. The concept behind a password manager is you use one email and password, which allows access to ALL your passwords. You can use it to create new passwords that meet strict security guidelines. No more using "pet name+birthday+exclamation point" as your password!

Current web browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox all feature built-in password managers, allowing for additional places to store your passwords as well.

Password hygiene is super important! Let me help you get your passwords safe and situated. Book an hour with your friendly neighborhood digital handyman (that's me) and let's get you tidied up!
