Should You Fix Your Inkjet Printer?

Sometimes yes… but often no.

One of the most common things we see is customers wanting to repair an inkjet printer that hasn’t been used in months.

Here’s the problem:

If an inkjet printer sits too long without printing, the ink can dry inside:
🖨 The printhead
🖨 Ink delivery tubes
🖨 Internal ink system

And once that happens, repairs can quickly cost more than the printer is worth.

A few important things to know:

✔ Inkjet printers work best when used regularly
✔ Printing at least once a week helps prevent clogging
✔ Cheap printers are often designed to be replaced, not repaired
✔ Cleaning cycles can help — but only if the clogging isn’t severe

Sometimes repairing an inkjet printer DOES make sense:
✅ Higher-end business printers
✅ Photo printers
✅ Epson EcoTank / Brother tank systems
✅ Printers with replaceable printheads

But for many low-cost home inkjet printers:

A lot of people don’t realize this:

Your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password are usually printed right on your modem or router.

If you’re setting up:
✔ A new printer
✔ Smart TV
✔ Laptop
✔ Tablet
✔ Phone
✔ Security camera

…the information you need is often already on a sticker attached to the device.

Look for:
📶 Network Name / SSID
🔒 Wi-Fi Password / Key

Usually found on:
➡ Bottom of the router
➡ Back of the modem
➡ Side label or sticker

One of the most common setup problems we see is people entering the wrong Wi-Fi name or password — or not knowing where to find it in the first place.

Helpful tip:
Wi-Fi passwords ARE case-sensitive.

Why Your Wireless Printer “Won’t Connect”

Most printers do NOT connect directly to your computer.

The normal setup is:

1️⃣ Connect the printer to your Wi-Fi router
2️⃣ Connect your computer to the SAME Wi-Fi router
3️⃣ Your computer finds the printer through the network

Think of your router like the middleman introducing the two devices.

If the printer is on:

Guest Wi-Fi
Different Wi-Fi band/network
Wrong password
Or not connected to Wi-Fi at all

…your computer usually won’t see it.

🚨 SECURE BOOT VIOLATION 🚨

This HP All-in-One came into the shop completely unable to boot after a firmware/security update corrupted the Windows bootloader.

The system displayed:
❌ “Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup.”

In this case we:
✅ Backed up the customer’s data
✅ Rebuilt the Windows boot environment
✅ Performed a clean Windows reinstall
✅ Restored Secure Boot functionality
✅ Preserved the customer’s files and profiles

Can this be prevented?

Sometimes — but not always.

Modern systems are becoming increasingly dependent on firmware security, TPM, EFI boot files, and Secure Boot policies. A failed BIOS update, interrupted Windows update, or corrupted bootloader can sometimes leave a computer unable to start.

A few things that help reduce the risk:
🔹 Keep backups of important files
🔹 Avoid interrupting updates
🔹 Let BIOS/firmware updates complete fully
🔹 Use a surge protector or UPS battery backup

Yesterday, one my sons showed up at my shop out of the blue and told me to close early because we were going fishing.

I honestly can’t remember the last time we went fishing together. Probably when he was a little kid.

Funny thing is, I taught him how to hunt, camp, work, and survive in the woods… but somehow never really taught him how to fish. Nebraska fishing was never really my thing, and it’s probably been close to 30 years since I seriously fished myself.

So yesterday we figured it out together.

We caught one catfish… and several rocks.

But honestly, that wasn’t the important part.

What mattered was spending time together again as grown men. Talking. Laughing. Standing on a riverbank with nowhere else we needed to be.

Life gets heavy sometimes. Work, responsibilities, stress… all of it piles up before you realize it. Yesterday reminded me that sometimes you need to stop for a few hours and make time for the people who matter most.

We’re already planning another fishing trip Saturday and a father/sons camping trip for Father’s Day.

I’m looking forward to both.
