“Age doesn’t matter.”

Actually, when you’re talking to a 15-year-old, age matters A LOT. She told you she was 15. That should have been the end of the conversation.

“I thought she was older” is not an excuse after a child has already told you her age.

Grooming can begin with seemingly harmless conversations, boundary-testing, and adults choosing to ignore clear boundaries.

A child’s age is not negotiable.
There is no grey area.

Protect children. Believe them.
Teach them that discomfort is enough reason to speak up.

Read that again.

A disagreement over clothes allegedly escalated into a woman being set on fire.

Domestic violence is not “just a couple’s fight.” The moment threats, intimidation, violence, or weapons enter the picture, the situation has changed.

Don’t normalize the warning signs. Don’t wait for it to become fatal before taking it seriously.

An argument should never cost someone their life.

A still body is not a yes.

We need to stop measuring consent by how loudly someone fought back.

Trauma can trigger fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Sometimes, the body becomes completely still. Sometimes, a person complies because their brain is focused on one thing: survival.

That is NOT consent.

And it is why questions like “Why didn’t she fight?” or “Why didn’t she say no?” can be so harmful. A survivor’s response to danger does not give anyone permission to violate them.

Before you judge how someone responded to terror, remember:

She wasn’t trying to win a fight.
She was trying to survive one.

Can we stop thinking about safety technology as independent devices and start looking at it as an ecosystem?

An ankle monitor only monitors the person who may pose a threat. A victim’s smartwatch or phone only helps the victim receive warnings or call for assistance. The police systems only turn information into intervention, and hopefully, justice.

None of these technologies or systems are necessarily sufficient by themselves. The real power comes when they form a safety network... a thriving interconnected system sustained by the people who use them everyday.

THIS is why personal safety applications such as NauNauSOS fit into and should be included in the conversation. NauNauSOS is not a replacement for police protection, court orders, or government electronic monitoring.

It has a unique role in the safety tech ecosystem. The app gives an individual a practical way to quickly alert trusted contacts when they feel threatened. If your campus safety advice starts with “dress properly,” but barely says “teach men not to assault,” we need to have a conversation. 😭

Safety education should teach consent, boundaries, recognising danger, reporting harassment, and holding perpetrators accountable, not make women responsible for preventing someone else’s violence.

Because a short skirt doesn’t r**e anyone.
A handshake doesn’t r**e anyone.
Being friendly doesn’t equal consent.
And being alone with a man is not permission.

Yes, UNILAG withdrew the advisory and said it does not support victim-blaming, but the bigger question remains:

When exactly are we going to get rid of this deep-rooted victim-blaming behaviour and direct our energy to holding the rapists and abusers accountable for their wickedness?!

Sometimes the behaviour we are quick to punish is behaviour nobody ever took the time to teach a child how to understand.

Disabled children deserve age-appropriate education about their bodies, privacy, boundaries, consent and safety, not because we expect them to behave like adults, but because they deserve the tools to understand themselves and protect themselves.

The uncomfortable conversations we avoid today may be the conversations that protect a child tomorrow.
