In 2006, Patchett moved to Google where he managed the Dalles, Oregon Data Center and led the effort to build and staff the Council Bluffs, Iowa and Pryor, Oklahoma. Ken then took over management of the Asia Region and was the primary force in creation of Google’s first data center in Malaysia before moving on to a 7-year career at Facebook.
“I am honored to join the CASCADE DIVIDE Board and work with this exceptional team,” Patchett said. “CASCADE DIVIDE has been a leader across the entire information technology landscape, and I look forward to sharing my experiences and contributing to the future direction and growth of this global leader.”
In addition to Patchett, CASCADE DIVIDE’S Board of Directors consists of JOHN WARTA, CASCADE’S chairman; Jim Griffiths, CASCADE’S CFO, AND PETER LEGAULT, RETIRED INVESTMENT BANKER. Cascade’s Advisory Board includes Jeffery Henry, former President of Time Warner Cable’s Texas Operations, and Matt Abrams, former Head of Oracle’s Analytics & Performance Management Product Development Customer Engineering organization. Founded in 2009, CASCADE DIVIDE is a leader in cloud, services and datacenter solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.
Q: Why join Cascade Divide? A: Cascade Divide Data Centers are positioned for the future. As more and more data is being generated at the edge, it's important to have your compute as reasonably close as well. Many companies are starting in the cloud for cost reasons. They quickly find that they don't have the control they need at the cost they projected. The "Big Cloud” providers get you started but you quickly find the hidden costs. One such cost is moving your data into and out of the cloud. Think of Datasets for training AI; moving those datasets can be very costly and time prohibitive.
Cascade is positioned to serve as a CDN, POP, Data Storage and Backup site that can be leveraged as companies grow and realize that they need control of their own data either for AI Training, Storage or Compute. We are currently working to bring a GPU cluster to our datacenter that can be leveraged by new customers to train AI with their datasets at a much lower price point than they can achieve today. Cascade’s site is purpose built, is very energy efficient with high power density.
As IoT grows there will be a growing need for smaller 1 or 2 MW datacenters regionally located where the data is being generated. This data is generally geographically specific and in order to train AI, requires regionally specific datasets closest to where it is relevant. Cascade is poised to grow into this space throughout the United States and I want to be a part of that.
Q: Many companies are in Hillsboro, Oregon following the undersea cables why doesn't Cascade have a presence there? A: Central Oregon and Central Washington has attracted many hyperscalers such as Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Apple. Although Hillsboro looks like a great spot for connectivity there is a risk. They are all located within a mile of each other, share the same 2 substations being used by the 14 Intel plants and the Nike Corporate Headquarters. They are susceptible to Tsunami and the Cascade Subduction Fault.
New Submarine Fiber Cables do not terminate in Hillsboro, they terminate on average more than 100 or more miles away. Cascade is currently working on new Fiber Connectivity that crosses the Cascade Mountains to the Oregon Coast. This creates a much-needed ring that is more convenient and safe from a resiliency standpoint. Central Oregon is a perfect location for POP, Brown site backup, Super Compute and Large Dataset storage Central Oregon provides security from natural disasters and terrorist threat. It provides more alternative paths that aren't subject to the inherent risk in Hillsboro due to saturation and location.
