Cats be chillin
2026

Two of my three cats out loving our patio (catio) space (Bruno “Meows” up top, Carmela below, whose name comes from the Sopranos.) We sit among the trees and enjoy the sounds to probably 20 different bird species. It’s fun to watch them space out out here.

I try to bring out what I’m seeing in the world with my photography. Mirroring it helps ya’ll get a feel for the beauty I’m seeing in all the colors and textures around me.These are an attempt to capture the beauty I cannot unsee in my surroundings.

Porcelain Gossip
2026

Not sure if this is some form of synesthesia, but when I take a photograph of the world around me, pretty often specific songs pop up in my head, as if the visual immediately ties itself to a song in my head. The shapes, colors, textures, and overall feel or mood somehow demonstrate to me, what a visual version of certain songs might be.

Many times, this occurs at the instant I see the image, but sometimes it occurs after I’ve created the artwork. Often, the songs I choose for my pieces are songs I “see” either as I created or view the artwork myself.

As soon as I took the original image (3rd slide) I could hear Gossip, by Tame Impala. This has always been a thing for me. And I’m just now realizing that not everyone’s brain does this.

You can see how minimal my process is. Most of the time, it’s even less — generally I photograph exactly how I want to mirror and don’t even crop and do some quick basic edits, but in the moments I had in the same space with this animal, I snapped a few clean ones and said to myself, I’ll figure out my angles later.

Google is telling me it’s chromesthesia or auditory-visual synesthesia.

I love walking around downtown Cleveland. The city is rich in architecture full of history. The details, the colors and textures that so beautifully take on the color tones of the time of day and weather… the visual wonder downtown is actually endless.

The Garfield Building, built in 1983, was designed by Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb. The building was erected by Harry Augustus Garfield and James Rudolph Garfield (sons of President James A. Garfield). It was the very first building in Cleveland built with a structural steel framework.

You can see The Garfield Building at the corner of E. 6th Street and Euclid, and houses Marble Room Steaks & Raw Bar, Shake Shack, and a luxury living complex that includes a gym and welcomed pets.

I love creating art that brings the natural beauty of a building, for example, to the forefront of a photograph. Composition is extremely intentional in my artwork, because these images are simply mirrored.

Beauty in the world around us is actually much closer than you think. It lies in the shadows of your imagination. Once illuminated, you’ll see the possibilities everywhere.

While “artist” has been a part of my identity for what feels like my entire life, for the last 14 school years, “educator” has also been a part. What I’ve learned in the last few years, is how starkly clear it is to me that I go to work for my kids. They are the most important part of my job. To get the privilege of watching students blossom in their creativity, to get a front row seat in watching them grow from big kids to young adults… it’s pretty special.

I feel so very blessed to get a chance to inspire some young minds, to help them find their voice, confidence in their own ideas, a vision… it’s the part of my job that I’ll never get over. How cool.

Some years are harder than others. This one felt heavy on everyone, for a lot of reasons. We had to find the light.

These windows at our high school always look so interesting as the sun shines in. I like the way this one turned out.

Happy summer!

⭐️ International publication status! ⭐️

One of my pieces is featured in the Purple Martin Conservation Association Spring 2026 issue! They reached out after I shared this piece I created from photography of the Celeste Purple Martin House at Lakewood Park in Lakewood, Ohio and I couldn’t be more honored to be a part of a publication of this stature. So exciting to be getting my photography out there and to know it’s speaking to people.

Conservation for these birds is super important as they almost solely rely on housing made by humans. In fact, they have lived alongside humans for centuries—Native Americans originally started the tradition of hollowing out gourds for them to nest in. Their flocks are so large they show up on weather radar and if you ever get to see their murmuration in person, it is truly breathtaking!

I decided to release a few pieces now available for purchase on my site featuring this piece, so head on over to daliajean.com to get your sweet Purple Martin gear. To learn more about Purple Martins and ways you can help be an ally to this beautiful species, visit purplemartin.org.
