Mumsnet, a parenting website in the UK, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have become the first known potential victims of Heartbleed bug. Both have confirmed that personal data and passwords of several hundreds of users have been hacked using the Heartbleed vulnerability. Mumsnet, after detecting the vulnerability, patched it up at an urgent basis. CRA, which lost data of about 900 users in the six-hour-long breach, is still analyzing the issue. Security experts have warned of similar attacks in future as well.

Just months after the launch of Windows 8.1, Microsoft plans to release its update. The Redmond-based software is likely to reveal more on its plan to make the operating system user-friendly at its annual Build software developer’s conference in San Francisco which starts on Wednesday. Microsoft will also update Windows Phone System to make it securely connect with corporate networks. Microsoft is yet to divulge the pricing or date of availability of both updates.

Beware! A new phishing scam is on prowl. Here, you receive an email with the subject “Documents” that leads to a webpage which appears more like a Google Drive sign-in page where you are instructed to provide personal information. Google has warned PC users not to enter any personal information as it is a scam. All those PC users who have already provided account information are expected to reset the password to avoid any untoward incident.

Eighteen months after the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft is now to deliver its update. Windows 8.1, the updated version, will be free from several flaws that Windows 8 has, and will run smooth on conventional PCs. However, the operating system will continue its Metro feature. Windows 8.1 has less disk space and memory hog making it ideal to run on tablets with 16 GB flash storage.

PCmover Express for Windows XP, the free migration utility, will help Windows XP users to upgrade to a new operating system. Microsoft users can download the English version of the tool from Microsoft’s website from Saturday. Versions in Japanese, Spanish, French, German and Italian will also appear on the website by the end of March. WhatsApp now belongs to Facebook. The Menlo Park- based social network acquired the mobile messaging service for $19-billion in which $4-billion will be paid in cash and the rest in stock. As per the deal, Jan Koum, the co-founder and chief executive of WhatsApp will join the board of Facebook. WhatsApp has more than 450million active users and 70% among them regularly use the messaging service.

Office 365 users can now utilize multi factor authentication to secure the suite from online security thefts, phishing and other scams. Microsoft announced the extension of the log-in verification feature to Office 365 on Monday in a company blog post. The security feature is already available in Twitter, PayPal, Apple, Google and Facebook. Microsoft may further expand the security feature to other Office desktop applications by the end of this year.
