The new version of ransomware, WannaCry, will encrypt your files and give you a specified number of hours that your files can still be de-encrypted. They demand $300 to send you the decrypt key or your files will remain encrypted and unusable.
Make sure your backups, systems, & protection are up to date. Don't be taken in by emails claiming to be delivery updates. In the past this came through as a .zip file. If you've ordered from an online vendor, they usually have a link to your tracking information, not an attachment.
If infected, don't restore the backups until the virus has been removed.
So far there has been minimal exposure in the U.S. but that has to do with the number of vulnerable systems. Here's the article with more information about it.

A Homeland Security official says that so far, "the U.S. is still in a relatively good place." But because of the malware's success, it is being tweaked to foil attempts to stop its spread.
