Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, is our nation’s foremost day to mourn and honor the brave service men and women who gave their lives in military service to the United States.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was officially established in 1868 through a proclamation issued by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan. Today, Americans across the country continue this tradition of remembrance and gratitude.

At 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, the National Moment of Remembrance encourages everyone to pause for one minute to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. ❤️🤍💙

Whether you attend a ceremony, visit a memorial, spend time with loved ones, or simply take a quiet moment of reflection, Memorial Day reminds us to never forget the heroes who served our country with courage and honor.

🎓 Did You Know? 🎶

Colleges have awarded degrees for centuries, but diplomas didn’t become common until much later! The very first Harvard diploma dates back to 1813 — nearly 170 years after the school’s first graduation ceremony.

Early diplomas were often printed on parchment made from animal hide, which is why diplomas are still sometimes called “sheepskins” today! 📜🐑

And that famous graduation march everyone recognizes? It was composed by Edward Elgar in 1901 for the coronation of King Edward VII of Great Britain. The song made its American graduation debut in 1905 at Yale University and quickly became a graduation tradition across the country. 🎼🎓
